Jonsey Flag wherever I lay my toolbox thats my... 24 Mar 05 12.20pm

Does anyone else think the Government should stand up and say 'that’s it the British borders are closed to immigrants'. Whether they are being threatened with death or prison in there own country, I couldn’t give a shinny s***e not my problem. You don't see a British citizen killing someone and legging it to Afghanistan going "QUICK LET ME ILL WORK I PROMISE".

Yes maybe a 1 or 2 immigrants work but for those 1 or 2 you get thousands of the f***ers sitting at home with there wife 6 children in a 5 bedroom detached and a BMW or a Mercedes, and its all paid for by the government. Mind you if were mug enough to do it then maybe we deserve it but I think enough is enough immigrants only come to this country because were a laughing stock and give free hand outs.

I also think we should change our laws on illegal immigrants, coz all we do with them is waste a few grand with lawyers and other crap send them back to France the French don’t want them so they let them crawl through the channel tunnel or hop on the back of a lorry, and then the driver of the lorry gets in the s*** what the f*** is that all about???

Some of what you say makes sense on a practical basis. I agree that theoretically there should be a ban on further immigration into the UK for the time being, but purely on the grounds that there isn't enough room here. The latest government strategy of turning large areas of green belt land into huge housing estates (but without thinking of how the transport, education, health and environmental infrastructure will cope) is not only a bad idea, it also demonstrates that this country is already heaving with people in an area that simply can't accommodate them.

But, as a 'civilised' nation and one that is respected by most other countries, we simply cannot close our doors when there are genuine refugees needing shelter. I agree that there are other migrants who are trying to better their standard of living, as well as those other immigrants (legal or illegal) who come here simply for the handouts. I think it's time that we shouldn't allow these classes of people entry into the UK unless they can prove they have a particular skill that we are lacking and that their presence here will enhance the general good.

Having said that, Jonsey, most of your post is a load of garbage. Where is the evidence for what you're saying?

Goodness is what you do. Not who you pray to.

Oh Jonesy This can be discussed and debated and argued until the cows come home!!

Funnily enough the other day a massive bill board poster from the Tories was put up around here saying

"it's not racist to put restrictions on immigrants"

Someone scrubbed out the not so it now reads

"it is racist to put restrictions on immigrants"

Nice work!!

In this country we have a legal obligation to accept people into Britain who make a claim for asylum, and they are allowed to reside here until a decision is made on there claim. Obviously we have a problem with illegal immigration but we aren't the only ones. So we can't say right no one is allowed to come in for 6 months. Yes there is a problem also with where we will put these people. I don't see where much of the problem lies considering the thousands of houses that are boarded up sitting derelict - the government should concentrate on regenerating these areas.

If the Tories hadn't have sold off all the council houses in the first place we probably wouldn't even have such a shortage now!

Jonesy I haven't accused you of being racist at all. I didn't mention religion or black or white either!

I have just put up an example of what I saw this morning on a bill board.

But this topic seems to come up every other month and the same people say the same things.

I am happy to get in to a debate about and put my opinions across, but it seems to me you know very little about the wider situation and are only thinking about what you think is going on here. Have a look at why people legitimately claim asylum, have a look at the benefits they DON'T get, tell me what you think asylum seekers get when they claim asylum... I bet you really don't actually know.

Oh Jonesy This can be discussed and debated and argued until the cows come home!!

But should the cows be allowed here in the first place? Are they cows whos fields are under threat? Or should we close the borders to ALL cows?

But seriously, what the tories are saying, "it's not racist to put restrictions on immigrants", I totally agree with, note 'restriction' not 'ban' or 'put a stop to' all immigrants.

The person that defaced that poster near you Soph is the reason we have this problem with immigration. It is not racist and too many people get confused.

I did not say that was MY opinion it is someone elses opinion I think it was extremely good work to deface to Tory billboard, the message they are putting out is a load of bollocks. I haven't actually heard there policies on what they plan to do to actually restrict immigration and how they will put it into practice.

Are they going to have Immigration officers at every foriegn airport and only let British and EU citizens or people with work visa's on to flights to Britain? Thats the only way they would be nearly there at restricting anything!

We have taken too soft a stance on immigrants for too long. We need to change our immigration policy before it gets even more out of hand.

The distinction between assylum seekers and immigrants has become very blurred and needs to be resolved. These days assylum seekers aren't just people looking to escape terrorist governments etc. They are just normal immigrants.

There needs to be a thorough screening process to see who should be allowed into the country. We also have to stop those looking to enter the country from actually staying here while their application is processed as it gives them easier opportunities to remain in the country illegally.

If people can prove that they want to come here to acquire equal opportunities and work then I have no quarrels, but there have been too many examples where those that enter the country live off the state. They get given a nice big house and a nice amount of benefits.

If people want to enter the country and gain British citizenship then it should be earned. Don't immigrants in the US need to take a Citenzhip test? We're lacking workers in the medical profession, if people want to enter the country on the basis to help us to help themselves then that wouldn't be a problem.

We also have feable laws on our immigration policy. We have potential immigrants taking the government to court because they weren't given immediate access to the country!

We are offering too many freebies to those who are looking to enter the country.
I believe the policy in Australia is along the lines of 'if you can't support yourself then we're not going to help you while our current citizens need our help'.

We're giving away money that could be used to improve the NHS, schools and trying to help the homeless. It's about time we, as a country, put ourselves before others. We're not the only European country that can offer a better way of life, but it appears that we're the only country that appeals to the majority of immigrants.

Surely we could also improve our stance on deportation. If people have come here and not bothered to get a job then they should be shipped out again. We shouldn't just be a charity case.

It also doesn't help with the fact that we're an over populated little island. Every square inch of free space is now being converted into housing.

A restriction on immigration is necessary. Obviously not a complete ban as there are genuine people looking to escape torture and what-not. But I don't agree to the fact of allowing people to stay here while their application is being processed as it makes it harder to deport them if it fails.
We also lack certain professionals who could eventually help this country. In the end this is a British country, if people want to become British then it needs to be earned and not taken advantage of.

Jonesey have you ever seen a BMW dealer that had a sign saying "Free BMWs" for immigrants...?

Of course not, many of them have legitimately earnt them.

Whilst a lot of your point I agree with, when you make sweeping and nonsensical generalisations like this one you just ruin the rest of it.

So whilst someone is awaiting a decision on their case what do you think we should do with them?

I have seen cases from people in the UK who arrived in the early 1990's and there cases were taking over 3 years to process, now it can be a matter of months or weeks. Claims to asylum have as you may have noticed in the press decreased, there are improvements being made. Asylum seekers no longer recieve state benefits they are referred to a place called NASS (national asylum support service) where they recieve vouchers that can be spent in certain shops ie Tesco's. This money amounts to about £20 per week I can find out the exact amount if people want to know. They are also usually placed into the scummiest B+B's which cost up to £250 a week because of the housing shortage.

If they are given Reugee status or indefinate leave to remain, benefit wise they are treated with the same rules as us, single parents and pensioners are entitled to claim Income Support and people who are able to work are shipped off to the job centre where they are enrolled on courses to learn English and either find work or claim Job Seekers Allowance.

As for British citizenship they would not beable to claim that unless they have resided in this country fo 5 years since there claim has been accepted.

As for Refused asylum seekers, this is a joke and I agree the Governemnet has a lot to do in the deportation side of things but woth people being allowed to appaeal over and over again we can't kick then out. They cannot claim benefits whilst on appeal.
