How much sun do we actually get in the UK? It's pointless puttin these up here - we don't live in nevada or the middle east!! Wind turbines might be a better idea over here. In terms of cost - aren't British Gas doing some sort of initiative around this? I know they were doing loft installation for free (?) for the elderly etc. Edited by Palace_love_affair (02 Mar 2012 3.51pm)

Or they don’t mind one but object to 2500 of them on blocking their view of the Chilterns. Offshore ones seem to be too expensive. Southern England gets plenty enough sunshine to power most houses. So long as the sun doesn't run out.

They cannot produce energy when the wind is too weak and are dangerous in extreme conditions, ie in a gale force wind they can catch fire. As you say, the NIMBY's don't want them anywhere, but to be honest I think they are ugly and do create a noise nuisance, so need to be improved before wholesale siting of these is considered. Solar power generation is the safest and less intrusive, but I see some people are complaining about how unsightly solar panels are on roofs.... you can't win.

Nuclear power is probably the safest and cleanest option but I certainly wouldn't want to live near a nuclear power station. There was talk of solar tiles instead of slate or clay ones (or whatever they are made of now) but presumably they were too expensive to produce.

Over 36 solar panel companies have gone bust in Scotland, however the power from the sun will last 2 centuries longer than it will in England, another good reason for the split in the union. FACT Edited by hibbystu (22 Feb 2012 11.35am) Dont believe that as its always p1ssing down up in Scotland!
Supported Palace for over 60 years and have seen all the ups and downs and probably will see a lot more before I depart to higher places! |

Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too? |

They just invented the near invisible solar panel, so give it 2 years and your neighbour will have solar panels that you wont see unless you look closely. Here in Florida is well worth it, however, most communities do not allow it because of the unsightliness.
