Such a shame what happened to him, but if he had a heart defect considering the amount of fitness tests players have done on them; they would have picked up on it surely? Apparantly a heart specialist was in the ground, and tried to get onto the pitch because he knew what had happened? Can only hope he pulls through, a good talent wish the best for him and his family.

Heart problems are usually only discovered when something clearly goes wrong, which is why the specialist in the ground would've almost certainly known straight away that it was a cardiac arrest.

This will sound weird, but a defect doesn't mean it will be either picked up, or even of concern in terms of football. These kinds of things happen all the time, every day, across the country - And its not news. Its just that on Saturday, it happened to involve a premier league footballer on live television, and so its news. The human mind associates the fact he had a spontanous heart attack with him being a footballer, because you experienced it, along with 12m other people. As I said earlier, had this happened almost anywhere other than a football ground, he would have been dead on arrival (probably even before the Ambulance arrived. In fact FA changes to medical staffing requirements of football grounds, saved his life, as they require a specialist on hand, along with an ambulance, resperator and defib machine for players, managers and officals use.

Indeed, most medical conditions are only discovered after something goes wrong, indeed some forms of diagnosis require inducing the problem. One thing I've learned from watching House, there is no diagnosis specality in medicine. People tend to think of medicine as a precise science, it isn't, its applied science, so theres always a degree of interpretation, and 'informed guess work'. The rarer the disorder, the longer it will take to diagnose and the more likely they are to misdiagnose. This is why people still die of menegeitis.

Nice touch by Madrid yesterday for Muamba and Abidal:

From SSN: "Muamba showing small signs of improvement". Doesn't need a machine or medication to make his heart beat. Also, movement in his arms and legs. Really hoping he pulls through. Edited by acolcpfc (19 Mar 2012 3.37pm)
I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day. |

Lets hope so, the important factor will be how long he went without breathing and how much damage that has done, I guess, now that his heart is working.
