Gus Van Sant made a couple of corkers- the cinematography in My Own Private Idaho is stunning and Drugstore Cowboy is also great.

Also not forgetting the Coen brothers.

Really like My Own Private Idaho and also Good Will Hunting, but he bored me into a comatose state with Milk.

Scorsese of course. How could we forget..but Spielberg? Nah....since Duel and Jaws - both superb - he's relied solely on sentimentality and/or easy on the eye watchability. Not enough scope to be considered great, Hence, the lack of Oscars.

Lack of scope?

Have you seen Saving Private Ryan? Close Encounters? I could go on...

And the Oscars comment is pretty ridiculous... He has 2 from 6 nominations with only 3 people ever having won more than 2.

Whether you like his films or not, the man is a genius.

Both good. Both sentimental. I have seemn all his films. An excellent film-maker but formulaic tugging at the heart-strings, etc. Not a genius.

The Oscars were due to ongoing media and public pressure directed at The Academy imo.

Both superb. Crouching Tiger (Lee) and Flying Daggers (Zhang)are among the very best films of the early 21st century. Also John Woo (Red Cliff).

I think you're both right.

Spielberg is a genius of his genre .....Many directors have learnt from him. However in a serious discussion about directoral greatness the fact that he layers most films with sentimentality just to get bums on seats does stay and detract from his repuation....Though I doubt he gives a fig.

However it's true, he hasn't always been thus and Duel, Jaws are highly respected and for their time highly innovative films, which informed much future commercial direction.

Living - Darren Aronofsky or Nick Broomfield. Content is always 100%.

Special note to John Walters and David Lynch.

Dead - Orson Wells or Cecil B De' Millo.

Weirdly, the same can be said for Friday 13th (one of the most successful films of all time). Jaws however is an excellent film, much demeaned by poor sequals and attempts to cash in. In its own right it can stand aloft, and its characters have more impact than its action.

Jaws is superbly shot, but fantastically scripted with brilliant acting and pacing. It starts as a film about sharks, but ends as a film about men.
