Pearce has been given the job to try and win games. Considering he can only pick British players this is a particularly daunting task but when you consider that the 18 players picked will have never played a competitive match together as a complete team, it will be nigh on impossible. Therefore the players he does pick have to be the best available.

Becks has said himself that he wanted to be picked on football ability alone, which he wouldn’t have been. Whilst I would have loved to have seen him play against UAE, his exclusion will leave it open for a younger midfielder, possibly (hopefully) Zaha.

I don't think it's really in the Olympic spirit though. Let's face it, this tournament will be much less professional by it's very nature, anyway. He would have been a decent addition, if not exactly the best available. I am glad that it gives Zaha a bit more of a chance, though.
