On another thread Syd was sanctimoniously lecturing other contributors to that thread to take emotion out of the equation; perhaps you ought to do the same Syd? You have obviously bought into the ‘Beckham brand’ and believe everything written on him, that he was the greatest footballer ever to walk the planet etc. Well, let me inform you, he was slow, one dimensional but was a great striker of the ball….erm and that’s it. If Beckham hadn’t been branded so well and not been as attractive as he is, according to the media that is, he wouldn’t have got as far as he has. In summary a reasonable footballer with a great free kick. Not the demi god that Syd and many of his ilk believe. I would back Stuart Pierce’s judgement any day, after all, he is the future England manager. He was the best crosser of the ball in the world for many years. How many players do you know who scored from their own half more than once and were capable of scoring direct from a corner? He was a special talent and played for 2 of the best teams in the world at the top of his game. Why are you trying to pick an argument...Oh, I know, because you like to argue. You haven't contradicted me in any way, you just don't like my way of phrasing my opinion. Now run along and get some wikifacts to back up your argument This is, I think, my favourite counter argument out there. Not only is it ad hominem, but it doesn't make much logical sense. It presupposes that in order to contradict you, I'd willingly surrender my actual opinion on the subject. Do you really believe that? I think the idea that anyone would do that is pretty comical. Especially me, because I love being right. I don't like your phrasing of your opinion because it makes Beckham sound like a weaker footballer than he was. That's not semantics, that's a clear difference of opinion about how good he was. You say he was "reasonable with a great free kick" and I say he was a "special talent and the best crosser of the ball in the world".
Most people who are the best in the world at something don't need to have anything extra to qualify as a special talent. But, since you're asking, he was also an excellent passer of the ball (long or short) and scored world class free kicks. He could have played for any team in the world. Which is all encompassed in my quote but "was a great striker of the ball". He didn't exactly excel at Madrid did he. There's a difference between being a great striker of the ball and being the best striker of the ball in the world. If you're happy to agree with the latter point, then any past description which includes the words "reasonable player" seems a bit odd/contradictory. His career was in decline at that stage and they clearly weren't set up to suit his style. No I'm not happy to agree with that. You, clearly have bought into the hyperbole surrounding this slow, great striker of the ball with no other facets to his game, I didn't. His careeer was in decline because a. Madrid bought him to sell shirts and b. he was surrounded by real world class players and came up short.
