What exactly did they expect? Even their choice of name shrieks attention seekers.

Loving the faux solidarity from other like minded attention seekers around the world.

They're a punk band. That's kind of what punk bands do.

I thought they made music? Anyway they've got the attention they craved, hope that's the last we hear about them.

You're such a heartless b*stard

Can you honestly say this is worthy of making the news worldwide? Nevermind headline news.

Where was all this support from around the world or from musicians when Dave Gilmours child got jailed? He was only swinging on a flag after all...

Honestly, yes. The protests here were about one very specific issue. This protest is against an entire regime, one that was re-elected in very dubious circumstances, one that is a major world power, and one that is one of the reasons that no sanctions have been taken against Syria yet.

97 per cent of cases that go in front of a Russian court return a guilty verdict. There's no jury. Just a prosecutor and a judge.

Fair play to these girls for standing up to it and bringing it to the attention of the World.

I disagree. People doing things they know they will get jailed for, then bitching about it isn't even news.

PR stunt gone right/wrong is all.

Like being a jew in Nazi Germany?

Ooh that's a stretch!
one is people minding their own business and going about their daily lives being persecuted, the other is fame hungry nobodies undertaking a deliberately provocative and illegal act for publicity.

I think my bloke swinging from a flag comparison was much more apt. Both got jailed.

Optimistic as ever

Russia is a mafia state. I completely disagree that it is comparable in a meaningful way with the better Western democraties.....We aren't perfect but we don't murder journalists or human rights lawyers.

The case of one particular campaigner who protested on western television about the raping of 'troublesome' women by gangs who she said were supported by Police...She says she has received death threats. Within the same report days later she herself is raped and murdered.....Modern day Russia is not comparable.

However I agree that Pussy Riot should be jailed.....Though not for anything like three years....Six months maximum, out in three if they behave.

Repeat and rinse if they continue to do it.

Edited by Stirlingsays (17 Aug 2012 4.34pm)

At the risk of sounding controversial, they need to be jailed. Its actually in the best interest of those who want 'a free Russia' that Pussy Riot and protestors go to prison, becoming international icons for reform of the 'Mafia State'. One of the key necessities of any protest movement are 'martyrs' that draw international attention, and raise domestic resistance. Imagine had Nelson Mandella not been imprisoned on Rykers for 25 years: the impact on the ANC internationally in terms of support, would have been far lower.

If you protest an oppressive regime, there is a price to be paid. Freedom isn't given, its taken by the blood, sweat and tears of those who stand up to injustice.

Every movement needs is 'innocent' martyrs.

There does appear to be a gathering movement against Putin's idea of modern Russia.....Thank god.

Obviously I feel Russia's economic preformance will have the major say on the scale of that developing unrest.

Modern communications will help, no country can just be an island, even one as large as Russia...Well, unless it wants to destroy its own country to hold onto power like North Korea.

Just to add to this reflection I regard these individuals as poor 'martyrs' for freedom....If anything these people set thing back in Russia. They should be encouraging the Church as a positive agent for change not fighting it. By doing this they can be labelled as 'freaks' and the validity of their complaints is lost.

Russia is a religious society, the freedom movement should look to the examples of Poland and East Germany rather than try to back these individuals too heavily.

Putin has a very large conservative christian support base. The church in Russia tends to lack any progressive elements seen in western christendom, having spent the last centuary being the bitch of anyone with a red flag and gold stars.
