Hi all, Wanted to see your views on my idea to help England's dire squad and how it might affect us in the future. In the Premier League I do feel that they should have rules in place where 5 English players must be in each match day squad with 3 of them actually starting. Quite similar to how Spain operate. Now I do not know what may happen to the quality of football the Premier League currently has, however with what Spain has, their national team are currently going through a boom. Winning 2 European Cups and 1 World cup in the last 3 competitions. Obviously this may be a bad thing for Palace, as Premier League clubs may look at developing players to bring across to their ranks. But in essense this will boost the quality of the national team. In Spain, players can qualify for Citizenship in which if successful wouldn't count as a foreign player (Even if they play for another national team). However I wouldn't like to see this in England, my view is that if you are able to play for England's national team you count as one of the 'home-bred' players. What are your views on this? I know something has been in the preliminary stages for the Premier League, but it would be good to actually see this. Edited by TooTone (03 Sep 2012 10.57am)

I think they should make it that Roy can only pick two English players from each club. Sure that might be that we miss out on picking the best squad, but players will be less inclined to play for the big four + liverpool, where selection seems to be default. Should also remove any fractions in the team Chelsea vs Man U etc.

The last game that Germany played didnt have a single german born player in their starting eleven, not got a link, sorry Wow... Didn't realise that!! If each Premier League team has to start with 3 each game that would mean 60 English players are starting every game week. That should dramatically increase the ability and skill English players have. Much like how Spain are at the moment.

I'd say go with the Ukrainian rules of a maximum of 7 foreign players on the pitch at the same time. Or perhaps to not have a break for international fixtures, and make the teams use their acadamies instead.

Remove unrealistic expectations of what people expect from the England Team would be a good start. We won the world cup once, with home advantage, back in the days when there were about six or seven decent teams in the world. Thats changed, but the press and fans still seem to think England are a world beating team. We're not, and we never really were. Success for England is getting into the quarter finals, and getting out of the group stages should be considered expected. Statistically, since 1945 the top four England Managers were Coppello, Ramsey, Greenspan and Erikson (with Copello being the only manager to achieve a .70 plus frequency of getting at least a point). Indeed when compared to other international statistics based on development, football playing, alternatives to football, affluence, population size and other statistically relevent factors, England actually out perform the norm. There is actually nothing wrong or dire about the England team, only the expectation of the media and fans.

But it also reduces their experience at playing with other nation and exposure to what psychologists call information networks. Essentially, by reducing the number of foriegn influences, you reduce the speed by which new developments expand. In Europe, the UK is more isolated in terms of network (geographically and culturally), and so developments and changes in football in europe slowly filter through. Ever wonder why English players fail in Europe, its because most progression in football stems not from the UK, but from within Europe. Spain are currently at the forefront of football, because they imported some great managerial talent from the Netherlands in the late 80s. In the UK, football follows a bizarrely limited grass roots mentality that isn't common in european football anymore.

The problems aren't just within the foreigners in the premier league however this is a big problem. They should limit this by making some sort of rule. At least 5 English players must be in a starting 11 something along these lines. I'm not too sure specifically on the rule but something has to be done. MORE needs to be funded for youth and grass roots football. Facilities here aren't good enough it's as simple as that. You take a look at the dutch, they have clubs with 3G pitches which helps with all weather conditions. Over here we'll just play on that boggy pitch 5 with the bit of fox s*** in the corner. The mentality within our children's game HAS to change or we will forever be looking upwards. They should insist on a rule where only managers can order instructions and parents can't shout at the children. If they do the referee should be allowed to send them away. Children these days are too pressurised and focused on winning leagues and trophies rather than the basics to enjoy themselves and develop as players. Because it's a stone wall fact you play best when your enjoying your football. I know of children that when the ball comes to them they just kick it away to avoid being moaned at and the thought of making a mistake. We need to teach children making mistakes is fine as long as we learn. We need to teach them to feel comfortable on the ball and to play with confidence and express themselves. Not a tense rigid way. It's starting to sink in but 11 a side at 11 years of age is stupid. Small sided games is the way forward and I believe a midweek Futsal league would really help as well as the traditional Sunday game. Futsal is slowly developing within our country as most Pro clubs are bringing it in.

Would not EU employment laws come into play. You could not say for example that there must be at least 5 English brickies on every construction site. (As much as we may like it to happen). Also Scottish. Welsh and Irish would all count as Overseas players. This could affect clubs in the Championship that get promoted as they may have to radically change there squads. Investment in young coaches for the under 16's a FA structured league 8 a side for kids 8 to 13 then 13 to 16 full eleven a side. The amount of kids I have seen that give up football between the ages of 11 to 16 due lack of funds, lack of coaches and pressure to play 4 or 5 games a week is very sad.
