Whilst the whole Anelka controversy is raging I thought it interesting to note whilst at Spurs away last week the Tottenham fans chanting 'Yids' and as is widely known this chant by opposing fans would and rightly so get them banned from the ground (any ground) so is it right they can use it ?

I know a few Jewish Spurs fans who say they don't like the chant and don't sing it but it has become a term of endearment on there behalf but does this make it right ?

I am a Jewish Spurs fan and the our use of the term Yido is problematic. Quite often I hear the term ‘dirty Yid’ or ‘f***ing yid’ used to refer to Spurs fans – usually by Arsenal, Chelsea or WH fans. And while I understand most fans who use this term use the word Yid meaning ‘Spurs fan’, I find the term offensive. Since we now call ourselves ‘the yids’, we give other fans the green light to do the same. But who out of them are using the term just as a collective term for Spurs fans and who out of these are also the people who sing ‘Spurs are on their way to Auschwitz’? It is hard to tell. From my point of view, I’d prefer it if we didn’t use the term Yido. I think that Spurs fans have had a negative response to David Baddiel because he is a Chelsea fan, but I thought his arguments were valid.
And while Spurs do have a higher proportion of Jewish fans than other clubs (probably only slightly higher than Arsenal though to be perfectly honest), we by no means constitute a majority of Spurs fans, so stastically speaking, it is likely that Baddiel is right – most of the Spurs fans chanting Yido are probably not Jewish.
