1. Players are nothing like stocks and shares.

Yes, they are. You buy them and you sell them. Their value goes up and it goes down. Investors even buy shares of companies that are about to go into bankruptcy protection (for pennies on their former worth) because they are gambling on the value the courts will assign to the shares.

2. You can always sell a share, or buy a stock or future if you're 'short selling.'

If you're short selling, you don't buy anything. You BORROW shares at one price, sell them at another price, and pocket the difference before returning the shares to their original owner. This merely tells me you don't know how shorting works.

3. The players that have been broadcast for the last 3 weeks are the type of player that if you find yourselves relegated, there may not be any 'exit' (sale of player).

Not that I want any of the three of them, but Jelavic is 28, Long 27, and Dann 26. All three are in the prime of their careers and in an age where players easily last into their mid 30s, they have resale value. Unless you think we should limit ourselves to buying only under-25s which, really, is going to make it quite hard to attract the Premiership experience we need, that is the sort of player we are going to have to sign if we want to survive.

4. To use your analogy, in stocks, shares and futures, there's 3 stages of a bull market. The smart money from the bottom, the followers, and the people buying at the top from the sellers, only in football you can lose every pound. 2010 need to and are thinking a bit smarter and hedging themselves.

I'm not sure what your point is here but you are surely joking when you say "only in football can you lose every pound." If you believe that, you know even less about financial markets than I thought.

Quote Ian J at 27 Jan 2014 11.19am

It's only confusing as Rudy Hedman keeps mixing up quotes and replying to posts that I haven't made so for the sake of clarity I will yet again lay out a timeline

1) I have posted my views that Steve Parish interferes too much in footballing matters.

2) Someone replies that at least he isn't like the owners of Cardiff and Hull.

3) I reply saying that the owners of both Hull and Cardiff pump millions into their clubs and don't interfere in footballing matters

4) Someone else responds that Tan sacked his manager and replaced him with someone else so he is interfering in footballing matters

5) I reply saying that Steve Parish also sacked our manager and replaced him with someone else.

I don't consider the chairman and/or owner sacking the manager to be interfering in football matters as if they don't sack an underperforming manager who on earth will do it.

1. SP is rumoured to have told DF to start attacking rather than pussy footing around, granted, and he was right. What's DF doing now, going round in circles.

1. SP has the say on when the pen signs off any cheques for players, and he is right to, IMO. I haven't noticed him or SB getting involved anymore than saying "They're not better than what we already have" (might be to minimise any hints of weakness in current team), or possibly being unwilling to raise the wage cap to pay way beyond what has been planned according to whatever factors in their model.

3/4 Cardiff is not the same as Palace as Cardiff supposedly trusted Moody with the money they pumped in and didn't know the cost of all the signings he'd made, then sacked him (although I do not believe they didn't know). Not particularly inspiring and not a great blueprint example. Hull have a different business model of spend now, now, now, think about the consequences another time, no doubt when the transfer fees have to be paid further down the line. Selling up when the club is on a high and sale price equals debt/owner loans and original purchase price is an option if you're still in the Prem, on that high. Doesn't apply if relegated.

If this is true, it's really frightening. Truly scary to think we might have an owner who would tell the manager how to play football.

If you think this was sound behaviour by our owner then you are absolutely barking.

Erm, I do know what short selling is. In stocks you have to borrow as you say. In futures you go short without having to borrow or anything. You just go short and the difference is the difference. Your patronising is entertaining though.

A player is different to a stock or share. As I said, there is ALWAYS AN EXIT in a stock or share because there is always a buyer in the market and on the exchange, unless you're a majority shareholder where yo may spook the market with an excess of supply over demand.

Yeah, I must be stupid to think it was a good move and SP was such an idiot we went on an 8 game run winning 6 and drawing 2, we picked up IH and got promoted. DF went to Bolton and cannot get out of 17th place even after spending £6mil following the run of form he had last season. DF is naive, SP knows when there might be a better option or he's not maximising his upside/ minimising the downside.

Oh dear. Well, at least now I've heard it all. You truly do get what you deserve in life.

This goes to show how someone who thinks he's the fountain of all knowledge can come unstuck, especially if they think trading footballers is the same as shares. Again, there is no definite exit anywhere in the contract of a player, there is with shares. This is probably going into an avenue not worth going down but to point out that buying a football player is like investing in the stock market isn't really true and actually further highlights how someone who believes they'resuperior, cannot see when they're blatantly wrong.

I'm not sure how interested in Jelavic or Long we were as there's mixed stuff on them but from what I've heard, the wages paid after transfer fees agreed, it's probably for the best. Are those 2 really worth what has changed hands? They'll make a difference, but they're not consistently top league performers by any stretch.

Scott Dann. Nobody has wanted to take him off Blackburn being on £30k so I don't see how we'll do any better trying to get him off the wage bill on £50k. He'll see it through as they all do, can't blame them. Football's there for that now if you can.

Erm, I think you don't follow/read sentences properly. I know exactly how it works. The broker will borrow the share for you for you to go short in the short-term. In the case of shorting futures, you can go short and then cover the position after.

You don't seem to grasp that there is range of risk you can take on, SP maybe doesn't want to take on as much as you do, or managers with a short stay at the club. And contracts can last the entire length, whether the employer likes it or not.

Syd.

Was enjoying catching up on posts.

prefer to gayles goal ,class rather than freaky but each to their own.
Could be the jewel if played more often.

The goal was a jewel but I'm unsure the player is. I haven't really seen much evidence since his arrival that he's really TPs sort of player, though. To be honest, I'm more inclined to get wound up about players when we have a manager I don't trust as much. When we have one that clearly knows what he's doing, I'm prepared to suspend judgment to some extent. I think with Pulis a lot of it is about a system and certain types of player being suited to that system. I'm not sure that Gayle, even if he is a good player per se, is really made for the role Pulis places on his centre forward. If you look at the players he's bought over the past decade, I don't think there have been too many with Gayle's physique or skill set. I might be wrong, though, as I don't know them all.
