The modern goalkeepers are so much better than those of of this era there is no comparison.

Interestingly the likes of Burridge, Clemence and Shilton were barely. 6ft despite their quality.

The Gordon Banks Pele header save is still the best one I've ever seen. A lot of goalies around then didn't even wear gloves and the balls and pitches a lot more slippy. Plus the fact the opposition were allowed to be a lot more physical in their challenges. To make it to a high level they had to be really really good and if they weren't they were soon found out.

Not sure how Jules would have fared back then. Nigel? No problem.

Harking back to the 'Good old days' I recall goalkeepers marking out their areas by using their boots to make a an indentation in the pitch in line with their posts to help them with their positioning.

My first games were when Big Bill was between the sticks but looked to be going. Palace had a very decent John 'Stonewall' Jackson coming through but considered too young and a bit dodgey. So Tony Millington, the Welsh goalie was bought to ease the way. It didn't take Jacko long to push him aside. Palace have had a good line of Welsh 'keepers up to Lewis Price, the best being Vic Rouse who made 257 appearances. But, like Lewis, non have made an impact.
There have been loads of one hit wonders, but one I remember as a very good 'keeper was Terry Gennoe. Here was a player who had been left high and dry when Hallifax went out of business and the FA took his registration. He played about 3 games and looked decent. Palace had a few on their books at the time so didn't take him permanently, which was a pity (mistake). And then the two Cedrics! Not really surprised neither lasted.
With the Palace record of producing top players on the goalie front it's not so clever. Apart from Jacko, Glazier and Hammond not another has been deemed good enough. Not even David Fry, who kept goal for the youth side of Hillaire, Samson, Nicholas, Fenwick etc. He made 50 odd appearnces but then got moved on in favour of Mr 'Flash' Burridge. Such a pity. The great Jimmy Glass didn't get one game! Hammond will have gone on to be one of the greatest, not just at Selhurst if he hadn't married a yank and moved out there. He did see 'international' football tho', playing for the US league v England (along with Stuart Jump). About time Palace knocked out another good'un.

For those who were too young to see John Jackson, here are a few facts about the great man. After a tricky start Jacko went onto to make 393 apearances with an acreditation rating of 9.40! Compare that with Budgie (102 @ 8.11), Bill Glazier (119 @ 8.0), George Wood (221 @ 7.0), Mat Clarke (40 @ 7.77 tho' would have got more eventually),Vic Rouse (257 @ 9.13). Tony Burns (98 @ 6.2) or Paul Barron(101 @ 6.17). Rightly Nico Vaesen was mentioned but he only managed 13 games but still made a fair rating of 8.32.
Back to Jacko. After losing 1-0 at Stoke the Stoke 'keeper said he wasn't sure who was the England 'Keeper on the pitch that day. That remark came from Gordon Banks (of England) himself! Jacko arrived late for a match but said his elderly neighbour had had trouble with her water cistern that he'd promised to fix.(wow). He didn't make it into the England set-up, but he did get a run in a 0-0 for the Football League v Scottish League. Brian Moore suggested Jacko be included in the England squad for the 1970 World Cup, saying 'Jacko' won't let us down. And he wouldn't have done. (Bonnetti did).
Stonewall left Palace under a cloud, being too much of a character for the ego of Malcom Alison to get on with. With Geoff Hammond coming through, you maybe could understand that, but the hurt was great for the loyal Jackson (and for many supporters) and he left to play out his career at Orient and Millwall. The 'OOligans at the Den loved him and I last saw him play for them v Tooting and Mitcham in a cup match at Selhurst. Still a class act. Last laugh Jacko had on those who had wriiten off the 'old has been' was when Ipswich needed an English qualified goalie for their Euro cup season. They signed up the 42 year old who went on to play a match and keep a clean sheet. What a legend. Anyone now wondereing who was Palace's greatest player ever?
