Sorry if someone has previously raised a thread on this ...but it was news to me and interesting.

Last night Piers Morgan was interviewing Sir Ian Botham. Sir Ian said that as a lad he was a proficient footballer and cricketer but reached a critical period in his young career when he had to chose to concentrate on either football or cricket. "...the then manager of Crystal Palace wanted me to sign for the 1st division club..." His father, however, persuaded him to concentrate on cricket. Otherwise, things might have been very different!!!!

That must have been in the early 70's so who would the manager have been? Bertram Head?

Botham played a few games for scunthorpe and Yeovil in the 80s, as a defender.

If we had Jim Cannon at the time then we did not need Sir Botham!.

If Botham was about 16 when offer was made then yes, it would've been Head in charge at the time.

in his autobiography he said that bert head was aware of him , both being based in the west country, and swindon who bert was manager of at the time was keeping a check on him, when bert head came to us he invited him down for a trial, reading between the lines i don't think he was quite good enough

I think Bert Head knew the family from his West Country days and I believe that Botham actually played a couple of games for Palace Juniors before deciding to go for cricket. Another junior Palace had a that time, who went on to greater football things elsewhere, was Malcolm MacDonald who played as a left back for Palace but went on to become a prolific centre forward for Newcastle and England.

The crowd is outstanding, and especially with the penalty after 44 minutes it was clear when we came out after half-time the welcome would be pretty loud and not too friendly. Crystal Palace wanted to strike back, so that was all clear. This is a wonderful place to play football - Jurgen Klopp

Botham was born in November 1955 so if he played for our Juniors it would probably have been when he was 16-18 so that was 1972-74, towards the end of Bert's reign.

Malcolm Macdonald was born in 1950 so if he played for our Juniors it would have been about 6 years before Botham and soon after his Fulham debut in 1968 he scored for them against us.

We certainly did ...he was with the club for nigh on 20 years. Palace legend Jim Cannon was another of Bert's juniors.
