So i've been watching a bunch of olympics lately. (i'm half canadian). One of the things I love is how they handle ties in international hockey. If the game is tied after regulation, they go to 4 on 4 until sometime scores or extra time is over. Wouldn't this be a much better way to settle cup competitions instead of PKs. Lets say if you are tied after 90 minutes, you play 30 minutes of 7 on 7. They would be lots of space and a ton of skill. Sure beats the randomness of PKs. I know this would NEVER happen since the FA is too stukc in its ways, but would love to see it for at least one of the midyear cup competitions.

Shouldn't this be in Football talk? Plus we're only saying about scrapping penalties because Palace and England are crap at them :P

What is the other half? What I would like is what they used to do in the states a number of years ago. same as pen kicks except the player starts on the half way line and runs towards the goal. Then it was down to the skill of the striker against the skill of the goalkeeper. You sound american, maybe you remember. Could be wrong but it was about 20 years ago roughly I think I saw it. Amused the hell out of me.
Why would anyone chose to be a Seagull? The Eagle is a far superior creature. The Seagull lives under it's damp pier meekly looking out, blinded by the sheer quality of the Eagle's palace. |

We drew with Minnesota Kicks at Selhurst Park 1-1 I think and did the 35 yard thing. Yes better then penalties.

I suspect largely for commercial reasons. More tv time if it goes the full 30 and there's only a little uncertainty about when it will finish (it's either 30 mins or 30 mins plus penalties). Practically speaking, I think it often made teams even more defensive than they were during the 90, because you've got "a shot" at the win for sure if you make it to penalties. At least under extra time rules, if you concede a goal on the counter attack, you've got some chance of the equaliser.

What is the other half? English; my mother's family is from yorkshire but i was raised in Camden until i left for university. I remember the 35 yard shootouts from MLS; it was a novel idea at first but over time goalies got so good at them you would occasioanlly see them go 9 or 10 rounds. Plus TV hated them since they didnt know when a game would end. the biggest problem was they used them for all regular season games. I think that is a bit much. Teams who fought for a draw on the road ended up gutted with no result if they lost the shootout.
