So where did Billy Gilbert play? If the Team of the Eighties' back four was along the lines of Sansom (LB), Cannon & Fenwick at CB and Hinchelwood at RB...

Apols if some now think this should be filed under "Nostalgia."

In the original post I didn't bother asking who our best full-back was, assuming KS to have been peerless.

What about David Payne??

Played in Midfield.

Not sure what Palace team you have followed Mr alaneagle but in fact David Payne was a defender (right back)

As for you post re John Sewell he was infact a centre half and his nickname was The Duke

Payne was No 4 Old fashioned Defender/Wing Half.?
Sewell was No 2.Fullback ?
Shovell was Bert Howe ?No 3 Fullback.?

In those days the formation was more 2-3-5

The 2 were Hinshelwood and Samsom.Fullbacks.
The 3 were Nicholas,Cannon and Billy Gilbert.
Gilbert was No 6.So a Centre Half like Delaney.

No idea of sewell's nickname but definitely RB. When we went up back then CB's were McCormick and Blythe with I think a Taylor at LB - was it Colin?

Seem to remember John Sewell being called "the shovel". His partner at left back in 68/69 was John Loughlan a signing from Morton. The following season Peter Wall was left back. Tony Taylor was also signed from Morton as a winger but played later on in the 1st div (now prem) as a left back. Colin Taylor also a winger played for us also in 68/69 but never played the following season for us after being in our promotion winning team. Those were the days :-)

Best only since Clyne. Personally I'd have Pemberton ahead of Humphrey all day long.

You'll be forever in my family's memories and it was an honor and privilege to play and lead in the red and blue
Yours sincerely

Well I thought it was Sewell/Shovell but then thought of Bert Howe.
Loughlan was the other fullback.
McCormick and Blythe were the Centre Halfs.
Both Taylors were at the Club in 68-69.
Wall signed in 1970.
And at 12 Years Old those were the days.!!!

close call that one, Pembo had that "Pearce/Dicks" style of a crunching tackling FB where as Humphrey had that football pureist quality about his game, where he would knock on a 30/40 yard pass onto the the touch line and then go and retrieve it, plus he was an excellent timer of the tackle , his downfall was being skinned by Giggs, I'd have Humphrey over all of them , just an opinion though.

That hurts.

Flanagan was never part of that classic team was he? He was also incredibly sh11te. Was bought along with Gerry Francis in the close season after winning Division 1. We were good up until Xmas then we lost 0-3 at Liverpool and 0-3 in successive games. Freefall after that all the way to Steve Coppell turning up.

The winning team v Burnley was supposed to be the team of the eighties I thought? 6 youth players plus Cannon, Doris, Burridge and Swindles and Kember.
