I was in Manhattan a year or two ago and went to the liquor store to get some booze to take back to our room. They don't refill the mini bar any where near often enough out there for my liking. We picked a nice bottle of dry white for my wife. The man smiled and wrapped it in a paper bag, it being illegal to display any alcoholic drink in public. Fair enough. But when I asked where his beers are he looked at me as if I was mad. 'Oh no' he says, you can't buy beer here, that's illegal. You have to get that from the drug store'.
How mad is that? So we wandered across the road to the drug store and sure enough, amongst the plasters and the aspirin are the cases of beer!
