does anyone know the attendance for that game?

24,740 according to the Breedon Complete Record. But Ian King's later version says over 25,000.

Of course, even in the 60's children & small people used to be able to duck under/be lifted over the turnstiles.........Numbers were never that accurate!

I was there on the Holmesdale terrace and remember being in awe of the men in white shirts. So fluid and strong. It was a real joy to watch. There have always been special times at Selhurst and this was one of my earliest ones.

I especially remember the Terry Long goal because I had many opportunities to reminisce with him in person about it. He became a neighbour of mine after he retired and, although never a close mate, we socialised a little.

He was very laid back about it. Didn't score too often did Terry but he was a very solid, old fashioned, half back.

You are right 1962/3 I believe. Madrid were the biggest club in Europe and I think they won 4-3. I was living abroad at the time but have got a programme somewhere. Dont know how CP managed to get them over.

They wanted a fee of 10,000 pounds to turn up - which we paid. An absolute fortune in those days!...

Ģ186,000 according to an on-line inflation adjustsr. The equivalent in 1962 of today's average income of Ģ25000 was Ģ1340, according to the same site. So, yes, Ģ10000 was a huge amount of money for normal people - but equivalent today to what many footballers earn in a week.

I was on the Holmesdale that night - a young boy - amazed to be watching the team that I had previously seen win the European Cup with 7 goals ! I can clearly remember Puskas scoring from a free kick by blasting through a gap just wide enough for the ball - I was right in line with it.
Looking up the game now it has only just occurred to me that Real played this friendly just 2 weeks before the 1962 European Cup Final. Puskas scored a hat trick but they lost 5-3 to Benfica who had an emerging star in Eusebio.
Can you imagine a finalist in the Champions League now playing their full team even for half a match against a League 1 team 2 weeks before the final?
A magical night and I've always had a soft spot for Real ever since!

Many older fans will have very fond memories of this grand occasion. The lights were obtained from Phillips in Holland (PSV) and Palace paid partly by letting them have young players from Palace for a while. In those days Palace would play pre=season games in Holland and win with scores of more than 5 goals everytime. The press turned out in numbers for the match v Real and enthused over Real's play. One headline was 'Byrne roams while Palace fiddle', one of the best headlines I've ever seen about Palace. It wasn't a surprise for Real to come over for the match as the fee was good, they had few games to get ready for the Euro cup final and Palace were not expected to give them a 'hard' game. Palace didn't, it was a very open and entertaining affair.

A season or two afterwards we changed our colours to an all white Real style strip - and it won us promotion in 1964!

Brian Wood is No 5 and Andy Smillie facing the camera to left. The Madrid No 7 is Tejada according to the programme.

I have touched the shirt worn by Madrid No 5 Santamaria as Brian Wood swapped shirts with him after the game and has brought it to the club on one occasion.

You are right itīs my father Justo Tejada he remembered well that game My father now its 82 but he its perfect next friday we will go to england for the easter. I would like to get the programme for that game. My frien Bill wyman its a Palace supporter.

Hi
This is amazing - so you want a programme from this famous game? I think I can fix that for you.
Please let me know if you want me to go ahead and find one.

I was there, I think it was1961 and from memory Palace lost 4-3 and that was against a Real side that had all their top players eg Ghento,Puskas, DeStefano, Santamaria. Terry Long scored a memorable goal and I thing Johny Bryne came back on the night to play for us. We were a third division side then. My Dad took me, I was 13 and had started watching Palace in 1958 when they were in the old fourth division south. Hope I'm right, it was a long time ago and a lot of water has gone under the bridge. Yes, you were right, it was the opening of their new floodlights. A great game and still have the programme.

I was taken to the game. Palace were 4-1 down at half time and recovered to 4-3 with young goalie Bill Glazier coming on for the 2nd half. Johnny Byrne came back for the game although he'd already gone to West Ham. As a 9 year old Gento impressed the most with his mazy dribbling runs. The subtle skills of Di Stefano were probably lost on me at that age. Santa Maria the Real centre half couldn't understand that Johnnie Byrne wasn't in the England 40 for the World cup in Chile that year and neither could I.
