Bearing in mind the last couple of weeks.... I would advise the OP not to consider being an airline pilot.

You're asking me what it's all about, and I can't tell you because I don't know what's going on myself.

Would like to ask is Stuart Shave, Steve McDonanld?

Yes, sadly there are similarities. I haven't been lucky enough to find a sympathetic Kym Marsh though!

Surely one of your mates must have a bird that looks like Kym Marsh?!

Quote Holmesdale Nick at 27 Jun 2014 2.41pm

I was diagnosed with depression following divorce.

I was not prescribed any tablets, but had a course of CBT sessions.

What helped for me was:

Look to the future and not dwell on the past.

Take up sport / exercise.

Try to make plans so you have things to look forward to at the weekends / in a week / months time

Early on, one of the hardest things was having free time. I was fine when working, and in the evenings but weekends were really difficult. Its one of the reasons I decided to buy a season ticket and come back to football, as most weekends that would be two hours to the palace, two hours at the game, a few hours post game and then another two home. Then Sunday I'd do all the house work.

For me, meds are a necessity of life, but some people its short term, and others not necessary. But CBT was just as vital it really gave me tools to change my behaviour.

The hard part maybe was accepting that the person I used to be was gone, and if I wanted to stay well I had to become someone else.

Yes this is key. I'm really struggling with this right now. I'm desperate to go back 12 years and be the person I was then and even to the point if I hadn't been at that place at that time I wouldn't be struggling with life now.

There is no easy way around this, no one I know who's 'put depression behind them and moved forwards' has ever managed to 'be the person they were before', they've all essentially reinvented themselves according to what it takes to stay sane.

I think the key is finding something you want to do, or want to get into, as a means of transformation (a new hobby or interest), something that the old you didn't really do that maybe you should have done, or made more off - and focus on this, these, activities.

One of the advantages of having to become someone new is that you can largely reinvent yourself however you like. Its really the sickness that yearns for that 'old you', who could do all the things that probably contributed to you become depressed and get away with it.

As you've probably gathered there are literally millions of people with depression, including about 40% of the HOL. Glad you posted about it and aren't ashamed - don't be ashamed of this - it more or less happens to all of us at some time.
Was given meds once - Lustral was the brand name I think. Took them for a while but felt like a zombie so gave them up. Have worked for other people though. There are bad days and good days. Try not to focus on the things that bring the depression on. I destroyed old photos and deleted emails etc. I threw away a phone with numbers I couldn't help ringing or texting. No point in focusing on the things that have heppened. Best to give yourself a slap in the face and move on. Try taking up a hobby - I found that a relaxing couple of hours a week at snooker helped and often feel better after a dip in the local pool.

In terms of meds, there are an awful lot of anti-depressants medications out there, and they're different things to different people. I think I tried four different meds before settling on one for two years, then switched to a new med that a doctor thought would be preferable, then a lower dose and then finally back to fluroxitine (prozac) which I take 20mg of per day.

Back in 1998 I was taking venlfluxine (4 tabs a day) then Roboxitine (3 a day and then twice a day), before switching to mild old fluroxitine 20mg once per day about ten years ago.

Thanks guys, some real helpful advice. And you're right there are good days and bad days and I know I'll never be the person I was, just wish I could be and those thoughts are the ones I've got to get away from and realise mistakes in life are made and I have to stop beating myself up over it and as you say try and reinvent yourself.

Just seems to be a story about depression / anxiety issues in the news every day more recently, or maybe I just notice more now - from Robin Williams to the co-pilot recently to storylines in TV programmes.

And amazed how many people on HOL have had experience of it too. I'd be foolish to suggest it had anything to do with supporting Palace though!!

I have suffered with depression/anxiety on and off (although it's been there but not as as prominent) for about 12 years.

Depression in my experiences revolves around situations, rather than coming on for no specific reason, though I have met people who seem have suffered from this happening.

Don't dwell on the past if it's a bad experience.

The thing which has helped me is having something to focus upon. I set myself the project of redecorating the whole house, and although it's taken 18 months so far, when I'm doing the redecorating my mind doesn't tend wander into thinking about negative experiences.

For something that doesn't cost anything, try going out for some exercise, the body releases a chemical which acts as positive to the brain when exercising. Stick some music on, so you have something to focus upon instead of just going out and letting your mind wander. I do this too.

A supportive partner and family are important too.

ps. Actually, Palace helps at the moment. I look forward to every game now, thinking we actually have a chance in every game !!
