How about Billy Gilbert - the original David Luiz?

He could never work out if he was a centre back or a centre forward, but it made for some exciting and hairy stuff at both ends of the pitch.

This thread confirms the fact that as Palace supporters we are rather partial to loony wingers - not loony as in mad but loony as in when they get the ball, anything could happen from a goal for Palace to said player trying to beat an opponent more than once and generally buggering things up. I give you -

Don Rogers (plus had a serious tache to go with it and also did a Pele)
Peter Taylor
Eddie Mcgoldrick (another cult tache, and serious winner of penalties in the 88/89 season against Brighton and Blackburn)
Wayne Routledge
Victor Moses
Scott Sinclair
Wilf Zaha
Yannick Bollassie
Vince Hilaire

Obviously some fine players already mentioned. Of those that havn't, in very poor teams in the 80's I used to like both David Giles and Alan Irvine (the benchmark was pretty low in those days).

Sorry mate, but I know memory fades as you get older and I'm always a bit biased because he's my favourite all time player, but surely you're pi55ed??
Billy Gilbert was a class act and it was said at the time he was the best centre back not to get and England call up, solid as a rock and pace to go with it.
He was nothing like David Luiz that's for sure.

no Keepers ... We have had 3 class keepers in past 30 years.. any other club they be legends .

Edited by 1066eagle (17 Nov 2014 7.57pm)

Julian Speroni and Nigel Martyn, help me out, I'm struggling with the other one???
And keepers don't really qualify as 'exciting' do they?

Edited by monkey (17 Nov 2014 8.40pm)

The other great goalkeeper we had was John Burrage

My pick would be:-

1. Johnny Byrne
2. Ian Wright
3. Don Rogers.
4. Vince Hilaire
5. Peter Taylor

Quote OldFella at 17 Nov 2014 12.25pm

Difficult to argue with those except Taylor 4 and Hilaire 5. But all time might have to include Peter Simpson!

OK - a different thread - who do we think were the 5 most exciting? The ones who really set Selhurst alight with anticipation?

My pick

1. Don Rogers
2. Vince Hilaire
3. Wilf Zaha
4. Rachid Harkouk
5. Peter Taylor

With honourable mentions perhaps for Attilio, Matt Jansen, Wrighty, Alan Whittle and Yogi Bear Hughes

lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright.
