Apologies Willo, but I just don't believe that. You're telling me that you've said to a black man 'Excuse me but do you find n*gger offensive?' That's a porky pie isn't it mate? Made up for the purposes of this argument?

Who said I said this ? I never used these words at all.Total hogwash. It is YOU who is making this up for the purposes of an argument ! I have friends and acquaintances of different creeds, colours, religions etc and I have had conversations with them on a range of subjects. From what I can recall it is THEY who have actually led the way in terms of shaping the debate.

I like that he said he has "hundreds" of Jewish and "hundreds" of Chinese friends. Who has that many friends?

So, because an Indian man once used a self-deprecation/offensive term (I'm guessing for comic effect), it's ok for everyone to use it?

I don't use that term to describe a person of Asian origin. The point I was making is that HE didn't deem it offensive at all and others I have spoken to are not offended by it.

You used the words "For comic effect" - If I had said that I used such words for this reason as part of "Banter" I would be hung, drawn and quartered.

For the record where a person comes from, what colour he is, what religion he is doesn't matter to me. To me the colour of a person's skin is no more significant that the colour of his eyes.I judge the person for what he is.

You said it Willo. See below. So, it may not have happened exactly the way I phrased it but to object to that is skirting around the issue. Ditto to who initiated the conversation.

It is interesting that in the past I have spoken to people of different cultures about words used to describe them and they tell me that their communities are NOT offended at all and see the terms used as "Descriptive" rather than offensive ! So who are the people who have decided that certain words are 'Offensive' to those NOT from these shores ?

What he said is true in my experience. Does that make me anti-Semitic?

Jewish people, on the whole, are the same with money as everybody else. Until you realise that not only are you anti-semetic but also highly ignorant.

Shakespeare certainly has a lot to answer for

What Whelan said might appear on the surface to be simply a thoughtless old-fashioned attitude badly expressed but it's much more than that. It's reinforcing an insidious racial stereotype. Exactly the kind of thing that bigots and anti-semites down the ages have used to justify their irrational paranoid hatreds. Whelan and Mackay are both clearly possessed of little brain. Dinosaurs with no place in today’s game.

With respect I wasn't skirting around the issue at all.I was accused of using certain words which I don't use.

Willo

He didn't find it offensive when he used it. If somebody used it to him he would have found it offensive. Of course, it's all about context. Can you not understand that?

The only thing worse than what Whelan mayhave said (I believe it's still open to debate) is the holier than thou attitude of people jumping on any old bandwagon that's passing.

What is acceptable and what isn't has changed over the years, e.g. Only Fools and the **** shop.

When I first moved to London in 85 I said to a new friend that I was going to the **** shop, he was Anglo Indian and asked me not to use that term. I apologised and never did again. If he hadn't had said anything I would have carried on as i didn't see anything derogative at all with the term.

What about the amount of people who are happy to call Welsh sheepshaggers or Scottish tight fisted etc yet no one bats an eye?

Whelan has undoubtedly dropped a bollock, but for me the actions of the man speak far louder than a clumsy ill thought out interview.

I do wish that people would look beyond words used and try to listen to the sentiment (Given he is defending Malky perhaps not the ideal scenario to back my view)

Those with longer memories might recall that our very own Ron Noades was accused of being a racist after some comments he made were dissected by the chattering classes and this was despite the fact that Ian Wright lived in his house for a while when he first signed for us
