The only thing worse than what Whelan mayhave said (I believe it's still open to debate) is the holier than thou attitude of people jumping on any old bandwagon that's passing. What is acceptable and what isn't has changed over the years, e.g. Only Fools and the **** shop. When I first moved to London in 85 I said to a new friend that I was going to the **** shop, he was Anglo Indian and asked me not to use that term. I apologised and never did again. If he hadn't had said anything I would have carried on as i didn't see anything derogative at all with the term. What about the amount of people who are happy to call Welsh sheepshaggers or Scottish tight fisted etc yet no one bats an eye? Whelan has undoubtedly dropped a bollock, but for me the actions of the man speak far louder than a clumsy ill thought out interview. I do wish that people would look beyond words used and try to listen to the sentiment (Given he is defending Malky perhaps not the ideal scenario to back my view)

Ron Noades wasn't a racist but that is a racist remark. Similarly Dave Whelan is not a racist, but at the very least he has publically supported racist remarks.

I'm always amused by people who get offended on others behalf. From my experience the Chinese are the most racist lot going, closely followed by the Japanese. To a degree what he says is true, I bet the vast majority of people here have used the word chink, paddy, kraut or **** etc. down the pub or at home with their mates. I personally wouldn't take ant offense to being called a cracker or a honkey especially if there is no malice intended in it. Was it inappropriate? Probably, but thats not to say he set out to be offensive which is totally different.

I used to have a Chinese secretary who lived in fear that her father would find out that she was seeing an English lad The worst example of racism (if you use the term in it's broadest sense to include religion) that I have come across recently was in the summer when England were playing cricket against India and Moeen Ali (British born pakistani) came out to bat for us and all of the (British born) Indians in the crowd started booing.

However, he said the word chink is not offensive, and that he used to say it of Chinese people when he was young. “If any Englishman said he has never called a Chinaman a chink he is lying,” Whelan said. “There is nothing bad about doing that. It is like calling the British Brits, or the Irish paddies.” Wong, director of the Manchester Chinese Centre an organisation devoted to Chinese community cultural understanding, said chink “is an insult, racist”. He has actively supported the comments on the basis that they were not offensive.

For me the worst was watching Valencia play Real Betis years back and Patrick Klivert came on on Valencia and the crowd made really bad monkey noises. Now I can "understand" abusing an opposition player but your own? Bet they would have been cheering if he scored the winner. As it happened Pablo Aimar got the goal in a s***e game lol. Hand on heart, I've never heard one piece of racist chanting at football in the UK. I do believe we are one, if not the most tolerant countries in Europe.

If what was reported is accurate Whelan was not commenting on the behaviour of a Jew but of all Jews. It's not faux offence or fake offence that myself and others feel, it's genuine offence at nasty racial stereotyping. I'm amazed how deeply ingrained anti-semitism is in some people. I'd have hoped we'd have learnt something from the past.

If a white person is with a black friend and the black friend gets called a "n****r" by someone and the white person doesn't like it, is he being "offended on someone else's behalf"? Were white people who campaigned against slavery being "offended on someone else's behalf"? Was Oskar Schindler "offended on someone else's behalf"? Was Nicholas Winton "offended on someone else's behalf"? Were any non-Jews who fought against the Nazis "offended on someone else's behalf"? If I object to my daughter being cat-called and leered at in the street am I "offended on someone else's behalf"? My friend has a son who is gay. He was once beaten up in a club for his sexuality. I was angry at that. Am I "offended on someone else's behalf"? If I campaign against animal cruelty am I "offended on someone else's behalf"? If you donate to a charity which helps starving children, are you "offended on someone else's behalf"? It seems that, according to the "offended on someone else's behalf" brigade, it's not right for anyone to empathise with or support someone who is suffering discrimination or violence. By this logic only Jews can protest at anti-semitism, only black people can fight racism and only gay people can campaign against homophobia. This is clearly a ridiculous position. As for Whelan and Mackay, they are welcome to each other. I feel sorry for the ordinary Wigan fans who must be cringing at the thought of their club being associated with these kind of outdated and racist attitudes.
