Greens = tax

If you want a high tax economy vote green

Tax = Public Services.

If you want decent services, raise tax.

It's a proven fact low tax economies raise more tax overall.

Is it? Prove it then. Let's see your facts.

Economic theory isn't proof.

In the UK, we've now got lower corporation tax and income tax and have done for a number of years. Have you got any evidence of either corporation tax or income tax revenues increasing in this time?

Especially when the economic theory in the link doesn't even back up the point the poster was presumably trying to make.

The problems with the council in Brighton mainly stem from the massive cuts to local government from Westminster. Obviously it makes the confines in which the Greens can carry out their more Keynesian, leftist economic policies much narrower, and it's caused real issues in the regional party by the sounds of it.

I really struggle to understand you Stirling, your arguments about energy prices is just so filled with holes. Surely you appreciate that pensioners dying of hypothermia is as much to do with the increasingly cold winters we are experiencing, as well as the financial squeeze a lot of working class people from all age groups are being burdened with? These are two things the Greens are raising awareness about, and which would do far more to eradicate the issue than just getting rid of the tax, which would probably just lead to a further price hike from the energy companies themselves.

The Greens' overall message and ideology is a bit vague and wishy washy, but when you compare it to UKIP it looks like an incredibly well-thought out analysis. And in terms of the main policy each party is pursuing, Climate Change is a far, far bigger issue we have to deal with than EU bureaucracy.

That is twaddle

The main problems in Brighton are that the Greens cannot agree, with themselves. They call each other Mangoes - green on the outside, yellow in the middle, or Melons - green on the outside, red in the middle.

They also opened their parks to travellers, which costs them hundreds of thousands of pounds per year.

They'll be gone at the GE.

Agreed - the Laffer curve just points to there being a tipping point, above which tax rises are inefficient. It doesn't actually quantify that level.

Loads of studies have been done on this topic and they tend to be relatively inconclusive as to the most effective method. Which isn't surpising or else everyone would have exactly the same model.

In fact a quick glance at Wikipedia suggests the median optimal rate is in the mid-70s. Which even including all government taxation is considerably higher than the rate we have now and that most economies are currently considered to be on the rising leg of the Laffer curve - so could still increase their total tax intake and not impact negatively on total revenue.

Interesting that Oxford Troll hasn't been back on the thread to provide the "facts" which he says prove his point about low tax economies raising more tax overall.

He might support Oxford but obviously didn't go to uni there (or anywhere else I expect) otherwise he'd have a bit better idea about economics. He also wouldn't feel the need to lecture those of us who actually live in London, and not leafy Oxfordshire like him, about the levels of immigration which have apparently "swamped" areas of London, which he probably only reads about in the Daily Mail.

I don't think people are against the idea of paying tax, rather they're more against the way in which its spent (or wasted) on things like vanity projects and political egotism.

Tax payers money is not just wasted on vanity projects and political egotism. It is wasted by those running public services. It has been proven that reducing public spending reduces waste and the waste that departments makes is criminal. Look at the recent news about the amount spent by the NHS on paracetamol. It was something like £5 a packet. Outrageous.

I am not for the dismantling of public services but I think a dosage of private sector keeping costs down management will be of benefit to all concerned.

I had LBC on at Saturday morning and a professor called in about this. One country I *think* was Japan slashed the top rate of tax from 60% down to 40% and revenues increased as less people tried to evade it because it was deemed to be a fairer rate.

I can't remember the chaps name but will see if I can dig something up.

If memory served, he argued a lower rate of income tax increases spending thus more demand for growth and tax collected through VAT and Corp tax as people enjoyed a better standard of living.

Was quiet interesting actually but was busy doing other things when I had it on.
