Much like the desperate Salvation Army crisis of old Whitechapel town, barely a brothel left.

Only the British press could imply that being teatotal is a bad thing.

After a few years of slamming 'Binge Drinking Britain' - I don't suppose that could have resulted in an impact.

Could be worse, you could be sending all your money to their homes, whilst they're in the boozer.

Pubs are dying out, the demand just isn't what it used to be and the alternatives are better placed.

This caught my attention as Stephen Williams is my local MP. While it is true that Bristol hosted a large number of refugees from Somalia a few years ago my contacts in the city council tell me that since order has been restored in a significant part of that country a large proportion of that community has gone back. In so far as I am aware most were settled in the constituency adjoining this one (Bristol West)and I do not believe there is any significant population of Somalis or any other recent immigrant group living here now with an aversion to drinking alcohol.

In the part of the constituency where I live there is a large bar which is reputed to have one of the largest turnovers in the country. This is partly due to location (on the Avon Gorge) so that and other very busy pubs around here enjoy both local and visitor trade. It is a fact that in most cases their income is growing, and we are seeing pubs opening and being refurbished in several areas nearby.

I am not surprised to find Stephen Williams giving a specious reason for problems in pub business in certain areas. It's easier to pin it on Somalis than have to acknowledge the effect of the smoking ban, the rise in drinking more cheaply at home and the fact that local changes and consequent drop in business mean some pubs are simply not financially viable.

Something tells me he may not be the Minister for Community affairs for too much longer...

Also, it kind of seems to me that pubs in and around communities tend to get shut down for being popular, the Portmannor springs to mind. For years hardly anyone went in there, a smattering of folks before and after games.

Then the Fanatics start using it, and it becomes the pub to go to, rather than the Albion, and boosh its shut down.

This tends to be the rule outside of football - because when pubs become popular, the tend to be a bit loud around 11-12 O'clock, then the grumpies all complain about the noise, riff raff and drunk people and it loses its licence, notably when the local MP weighs in around election time to put pressure on the police and licensing committee.

Then the same people complain about the closure of pubs.

Dozens of things to blame. NIMBYists are the worst. People move into an area and piss and moan about something which was there long before them, be it a football club or a takeaway. Pubs get it the worst. My friend told me the Black Sheep was closed down by local residents in Croydon and I said "what residents!?!" He told me that new flats had been built.
