So anyway, I go the shop to get some light bulbs and they only sell the halogen or LCD energy saving ones which are quite expensive. Thought it was odd so I went to another supermarket and same s***.

Why don't they sell the normal cheap bulbs anymore?

You can thank the E.U. or the Tree Huggers for that. My houses in London I've had light bulbs which have been in there for donkeys years. The bulbs you by now seem to cost three times as much and last 5 minutes.

I had 7 halogens in my hallway - they were always blowing, often several per week!

Now they have been replaced with LED bulbs, the step ladder is back in the garage.

Always go for LED bulbs and keep the packing and your receipt. If they blow within guarantee period, simply go back to the store and demand a replacement.

Edit

These are what I use now. Expensive, but at least when they do blow, I don't feel that I've been ripped off as like I was with the halo's.

Watt??? You sound incandescent with rage. Let it go or it'll drive you filamental. The stress caused could make you dimmer. Chill out by browsing e.....bay or net.....based sites.

Go to a local convenience or hardware shop and they'll have old bulbs still.

Incandescent has been phased out by new EU regulations. It's still allowed be be sold if companies have stock, its just not manufactured any more. Next step up is halogen which is twice the life of incandescent (2000hrs).

LED has a life of 30-50,000hrs, depending on manufacturer. You do pay a fair bit more compared to halogen but LED is an investment. Most retrofit LED equivalents have a pay back time of 3-6 months depending on use, but when you consider there's 8760 hours in a year and the the lamps are lasting 30,000+ hours , that pay back time is nothing.

So not only do you rarely have to pay out for a replacement but you're benefiting the environment by using less power. Plus, you're notice the bills going down!

My lounge light bulb blew this morning. I haven't had to buy a bulb in years, how much are they these days?
