I like your aggressive tone stirling, I just wish the West would see the danger ahead if HitlerII is allowed to sing his tune! I know The UK needs to look after its own, but this could become something, so let's hope the west is as ready as you surmise! But you are right, if the really want the west can give it, but does the west want to?

I think you've essentially hit the nail on the head.

The EU, apart from France and us have joke militaries and aren't going to use them outside of personal defence...It's a bit pathetic.....But if Putin doesn't prove to be someone who can be reasoned with I can see the US and the willing funding the Ukraine army and providing the weapons...aka a proxy war....I can see that happening especially from the US, UK and France.

I think Putin will try to push until he thinks that is going to happen or the national reserve runs out.....Essentially he's making a big gamble....I think too big.

Those whose opinions you care about....Usually those who care about you.....No other opinions should count on an emotional level.

Well Stifling, cannot argue with that!!! I would like to but, Putin will go go go, until actually someone really says STOP, and means it! No sanctions, or be careful but actually does something proper, because he is simply playing hardball with a roll of cotten!

Putin and the whole aggressive Russia scenario.....Anyone want to put out any guess where this will all end?

I'm no fan off Putin but we got what we wished for. We never intended to support democracy in Russia. We just wanted a strong leader that we could (at first in any case) do business with. That is what we always work towards.

But Russia agreed to the unification of East and West Germany on condition that NATO didn't extend beyond East Germany. The West has reneged on this. The USA would never agree to a hostile foreign power anywhere near their border. As a comparison the USA has no claim to a piece of Cuba but refuses to leave, while we criticize Russia for taking the Crimea which they have a greater claim too.

The disappointing thing is that Britain's position is exposed. Our navel gazing over Europe has meant we are not even at the negotiation table. The pint and the pound might survive but British influence in Europe is on the skids.

I hope we - well France, Germany, Ukraine and Russia can sort it out - maybe posh Dave and that invisible foreign secretary are too busy fulfilling their commitments to cut some Hedge Fund manager's grass after their Black and White Gala to get involved in foreign policy.

If it kicks off it won't be a nice distant war against a third world army. So lets hope the French and Germans have the diplomatic skills to save us from that

I hope not. Jaw jaw rather than war war. Especially as the Ukraine's Azov Battalions are a bunch of Nazis.

Putin is worth 70billion dollars according to Forbes. Not bad for someone on a presidential salary of less than 200k dollars per annum and what with being a 5ft cabbage patch doll in human form.

He's almost as wealthy as Tony Blair.

Firstly your analysis of Britain's power in Europe is just wrong.

Along with France we are the only nuclear power and also along with France we have the only military worth the name.

We have a seat on the security council.

All your .....we haven't got influence in the EU over military matters is pure lefty make believe.....We certainly have.....When it comes to the tip of the spear for Europe we are most definitely at the sharp end.

We aren't being ordered by Germany isn't something we don't agree with.......And along with the US the only reason Putin is listening to anyone is because....also along with the Americans the British are the ones arguing that the time is coming to arm the Ukraine and to even things up a bit.

Putin most definitely isn't fond of that idea....He isn't talking because they are putting on nice cups of tea.

So when it comes to actually getting things done it's down to the anglo saxon cultures of the US and the UK plus the France.....Who know a little bit about the value of maintaining a military.

"The EU, apart from France and us have joke militaries"

I don't know if you were aware but there was a big war in Europe and the outcome of that has influenced who is allowed to have "none joke militaries". The Germans have a good military history but we weren't so keen to let them have another go at arming up too quickly.

Perhaps that is why they are keen to jaw jaw with Russia. Or maybe its just they have watched less films featuring Sylvester Stallone than you have.

I bet you think war is all about being in a fox hole and sewing your wounds up with your own boot lace and then getting on that machine gun. Rat Tat Tat Rat Tat Rat Look at good old Stirling holding back Johny Foreigner!

If the s*** hits the fan it's really important what the fifth and sixth largest economies think (Us and France).....And along with the US the only reason Putin is listening to anyone is because....also along with the Americans the British are the ones arguing for increasing the sanctions and the ones saying that the time is coming to arm the Ukraine and to even things up a bit.

We are not at the meeting. We normally would be. We have always been key players in foreign policy in Europe and yet we are absent from the biggest meeting regarding a threat to peace in Europe since 1945. That is my point. The EU is the main player in Europe now and France and Germany run that. It is a catastrophic failing of the Tories and their half-hearted relationship with the EU.

We aren't there for exactly the reason I said.

Maybe you haven't been reading up on the situation but the UK has been arguing for increased sanctions and along with the US raising the possibility of arming the Ukraine.

We weren't there for exactly the reason the US weren't there.....Not because what we think doesn't matter but because Russia don't want to talk to us because we are playing hard ball.

Good cop, bad cop.

Putin would not have been there at all without the threat to his interests.
