It's Hammond and May that deserve our sympathy. When you distill it to a human level, taking the money and viewers out, Clarkson's just another tit who let down his mates.
It's worth repeating but he isn't even a real hamster. I may have missed it but I have only heard May stick up for Clarkson, Hammond has been quiet as a small rodent.
He said "Gutted at such a sad end to an era. We're all three of us idiots in our different ways but it's been an incredible ride together." earlier on Twitter but that's about it. that's what my first wife said after the divorce was stamped in Croydon CC.

The official report: Quote Specific facts I have found as part of my investigation are as follows:
- earlier on 4 March, studio recording of Top Gear had taken place in Surrey and the presenters had travelled that same evening to the location shoot in North Yorkshire; - the incident occurred on a patio area of the Simonstone Hall Hotel, where Oisin Tymon was working on location for Top Gear; - the physical attack lasted around 30 seconds and was halted by the intervention of a witness; - it is the case that Oisin Tymon offered no retaliation; - the verbal abuse was directed at Oisin Tymon on more than one occasion – both during the attack and subsequently inside the hotel – and contained the strongest expletives and threats to sack him. The abuse was at such volume as to be heard in the dining room, and the shouting was audible in a hotel bedroom; - derogatory and abusive language, relating to Oisin Tymon and other members of the Top Gear team, continued to be used by Jeremy Clarkson inside the hotel, in the presence of others, for a sustained period of time; - it is clear that Oisin Tymon was shocked and distressed by the incident, and believed that he had lost his job; - following the attack, I understand that Oisin Tymon drove to a nearby A&E department for examination; - over the subsequent days, Jeremy Clarkson made a number of attempts to apologise to Oisin Tymon by way of text, email and in person; and - it is the case that Jeremy Clarkson reported the incident to BBC management. It was not disputed by Jeremy Clarkson or any witness that Oisin Tymon was the victim of an unprovoked physical and verbal attack. It is also clear to me that Oisin Tymon is an important creative member of the Top Gear team who is well-valued and respected. He has suffered significant personal distress as a result of this incident, through no fault of his own.

The BBC is a self harming 'knob' of a corporation. When it loses its license fee, while I'll be sad to see a once great institution destroyed I'll at least be gladdened by the thought of all the lefty liberals within it who will lose their jobs. Its such an inherently lefty organisation that until the 80's it allowed MI5 to liaise to vet BBC job applications and current employees. Its so lefty that its last two star political TV performers have been Tory (Paxman) or Liberal (Robin Day). I did work for some BBC programmes,radio and TV; average staff member anything but a raging lefty.Plenty of good and true members of the "establishment" in the mix. You only have to look,for example,at its Israel/Palestine coverage to see that it has regularly been lambasted by supporters of "both sides". Hardly an inherently "lefty" organisation. The only reason it will lose the licence fee will be because of lily livered politicians bowing to (when not shamelessly adding to in order to curry favour) the efforts of Murdoch and other media owners standing to benefit financially in a big way from its demise,and members of the public falling for the non stop propaganda pumped out to try and justify this. Don't knock it - BBC has the only TV channels anyone can watch comfortably in real time. Otherwise you have to resort to the recorder and fast track through the adverts to stay sane and maintain an interest in the programme you are watching! Edited by Percy of Peckham (25 Mar 2015 8.50pm)

The reality is that the report was worse than people had thought, so it becomes hard to defend his actions. This wasn't a drunken punch in the heat of the moment. It was 30 minutes of verbal abuse, profanity and threats aimed at Oisin Tymon and others, followed by a 30 second long physical assault resulting in multiple injuries and hospital treatment. The assault only ended when someone managed to intervene. Tymon did not retaliate at any point. Brand got sacked for much less and he's a lefty, so we can remove politics from the equation and he's still getting the boot. In fact Clarkson didn't even get sacked, they just aren't renewing his contract. The timing of this fracas in relation to the contract made it more likely they'd be parting ways. The general consensus online now in light of this is that people aren't bothering to defend him now but are just sad to see them leave the show. They'll all end up on Sky or Netflix before long though so fans of the trio won't be missing out for long. Edited by imbored (25 Mar 2015 10.08pm)

Stepping outside of the whole Clarkson thing for a minute I think the BBC's main 'problem' (amongst many), is that it try's to be all things to all people (which I know is kind of its Reithian remit) and therefore everybody can find something to moan about or disagree with. The right wing thinks its left wing, the left wing think its right leaning, its racist / its not racist enough etc etc etc etc Edited by The Sash (26 Mar 2015 10.07am)
