The problem for the BBC is that JC and his executive producer own 50% of the production company that make TG (the BBC own the other 50%). It won't continue if the two parties can't come to an agreement and with a worldwide audience of 300m and the BBC earning £4.5m from the programme last year, it will be a huge decision for the Beeb.

How come they only earned £4.5m from it with an audience of that size?

They sold their stake to the BBC a couple of years ago and Clarkson trousered quite a few million as a result

Top Gear can't go elsewhere but Clarkson and the format can. On the other hand, he can't go around acting the oaf.

If BBC sack him there will be loads waiting to use him.

I can't see the show carrying on without him really, so whatever has happened they're in a really difficult position.

The problem with th BBC is that when people get big, they become almost untouchable.

As much as I love the show and him on it, he's a kn*b..

I'd watch it without him.

Slightly off topic but...

If news bulletins give warnings about flash photography, why can't the BBC, at the beginning of the programme, advise that PC brigade to 'switch off now'.

I don't mind politically incorrect words or actions, and I don't really care if it is sprinkled with swear words.

All this is about the BBC being seen to toe the accepted line. Be maverick BBC, use bar room brawls as free publicity. Even air the punch up - it will bring in millions of viewers.

I don't watch Top Gear but just like no footballer is bigger than the club its the same here that no presenter is bigger than the show.

I'm sure there is someone else out there that can replace JC, probably not presenting it in the same way but in a different style.

If you HAD watched the show, you would realise JC is the show.

TV companies will be queuing up to get Clarkson (and the other 2) if BBC stupidly let him go. Top Gear brings in over £200M from overseas.... a big contribution towards other productions/projects the BBC would not be able to do.

JC would come up with a suitably funny name for a new show that was very similar to Top Gear and carry on regardless.

He has the BBC over a barrel and he knows it.

According to Radio 4 news this morning they quoted TG earning £200M from overseas syndication and that Clarkson sold his existing stake ages ago.

It will still be a huge cock up by the Beeb if they let him go.
