The 2 places recommended to me were Harry's Bar and Florian's.

They also turned out to be the most expensive refreshments I've ever purchased at €30 for a couple of drinks, and €12 for a hot chocolate respectively.

I don't think that you go to places like that for cheap drinks; another way of looking at is that the drinks are free, you are paying for the "ambience".

Over the years patrons of Harry's Bar have included Ernest Hemingway, Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Aristotle Onassis, Alfred Hitchcock and Woody Allen, am.

While you are unlikely to see any of those guys there nowadays (Woody Allen's still a possibility though), who knows who may be there this weekend?

get three day waterbus pass.

You can go anywhere you like, Murano to see glass blown travel down the Grand Canal, go to the Lido, circumnavigate Venice, see the best view in Venice, which isn't St Mark's square but the Campanile on the island opposite St Mark's square [San Giorgio Maggiore].

There are decent walks train station to St Mark's via the Rialto, or I like walking down from St Mark's to the football stadium, less tourists.

Love Venice, and never been to Harry's Bar nor been on a Gondola. There are a lot of decent places to go that aren't over priced and on St Mark's square.

If you are flying out of Venice the quick way is the autobus from outside the station, if you have money left take one of the classic water taxi speedboats.

The Campanile in St Marks Square has a lift to the top, great view from there of Venice and the Islands.

Went to this restaurant twice a few years back Ostaria al Vecio Pozzo address is in the Santa Croce area across the bridge over the Grand Canal directly outside the railway station but tucked away so you will need to ask directions.email address is info@veciopozzo.it

Very popular place, excellent steaks and wide range of food in general, good atmosphere etc stays open late, good place to take a lady.

I was there for a brief stay about 15 years ago. After I was charged around a tenner for half a lager, I went to the toilet and p1ssed all over the floor. Hope this helps.

Don't walk the streets at night!

We were there in Feb 2013 and walked through backstreets at night and we were perfectly fine. We asked the hotel beforehand about the streets at night, and they said it was ok.

Stay away from massive touristy places. We found a great little pizzeria in the backstreets (starters, pizzas, bottle of wine, coffees all for 50 euros total). We also found a little bar, with glasses of red wine for 3 euros.

Lots of good places just off the beaten track I've eaten at the Al Vagon a few times over the years. Nice for romantic couples as you can have a table outside next to a quiet canal.

Lots of local Venetian recipes and wines.

Never had a problem with crime, apart from the prices in St Marks.

I am from this region so have been in Venice dozens of times.
I don't like the smell but I reckon the place is nice :P

If you like to stroll around you can start from Railway station, go down to the Zattere (ask in case), there's a big sidewalk around the canal with a great view [Link]
then you can go to the Accademia bridge (nice view), and go back to the Station by passing a number of nice Campi (squares) via San Marco and then via Rialto.
It's a good walk for one day but you can do it!

P.S. I've never heard of problems at night, never.
