Been a good week for astronomy & the sun, hopefully we get clear skies.
The earth only has total eclipses for another 16000 years then they are gone forever.

Why?

Because the moon is slowly moving away from the earth?

I love the use of the word "only" for 16,000 years.

Computer-based cyborgs will have taken over the planet by then. Can't see them standing around with pinhole cameras somehow.

...we must expand...get more pupils...so that the knowledge will spread...

Hoof has nailed it, The moon is moving away from the earth at 4cm a year, Although I'll hold my hands up & say I cocked up on the actual time this is going to take to happen but happen it will.
(In my defence I could have sworn I heard Brian Cox say it yesterday )

We put a mirror on the surface of the moon & shoot a laser at it every day to measure the distance.

Nice one Dan.

Today is my 3rd experience of a Solar Eclipse, so I've had a "good innings".

The first was in 1961 when I was 7 years old which I watched from Camden Rd school, Carshalton. The teacher gave us smoked glass to view it.

The second was in 1999 in Portishead nr Bristol.

Plus today in north Bristol.

All three have been about 90% from where I have viewed the phenomenon.

I doubt I'll see another as I'm 60 yrs old now.

You will, when you will be 71, and it will be from 83 to 95% coverage in the UK. Unless you book a holiday to Spain mainland or Balearics where you will get the 100%.

By 16,000 years someone will have shot a warhead at it, or something stupid.

In the good old days, we used to get proper solar eclipses, not like these namby pamby modern ones. Kids today, don't know they are born.

Funny enough TC although I am sure there must have been eclipses since, I had a bit of a flashback to when I was about 8 in primary school (nigh on 40 years ago now) - none of this 'look at a piece of card' or special celebratory goggles - they marched the entire school into the playground and made us look up under pain of death to witness the wonder of the cosmos...

You may laugh SF but when I had an eye test they said I had 'black spots' on my retina and asked if I have either received severe blows to the head (yes) or had any prolonged exposure to bright lights - b******s....

Didn't need goggles back then, we had an Ozone still.

Not that any of us knew f*** all about it until they started banning aerosol cans and polystyrene cups!
