Feel pretty certain is wasn't started deliberately as the rubbish underneath the stands was well known about and a dropped fag butt seems reasonable. Also, the chairman dodgy or not didn't come across as insincere or hiding something in the aftermath.

I have no idea if it was deliberate or not, or hope not, but he should have been prosecuted for manslaughter anyway.

Quote Methinks someone wants to sell some sensational book. He'll be on Graham Norton next.

That's a bit harsh.

You're right. I'll wind my neck in.

Jonathan Ross.

Lost his brother, father, uncle and grandfather.

Somehow I don't think he's out to make a few quid or get 5 minutes of fame.

Implying that someone who 'liked a bit of insurance' was intentionally behind the fire and, thus, murdered 56 people if there is no strong circumstantial evidence at the very least is wrong - loss of family or not. Which makes me question his motives. Have to remember that the late Chairman has living family too.

"Mr Fletcher, who lost three generations of his family in the blaze, claimed to have uncovered evidence Mr Heginbotham was in dire financial trouble at the time, and has called for a fresh inquiry.

He makes no direct allegation against the club's chairman in the book, which is being serialised in the Guardian, but does ask if any man could be as "unlucky" as Mr Heginbotham appeared to be."

He'd like a fresh inquiry.

No smoke without fire would seem an appropriate response

So is "correlation does not prove causation". Whilst I'm sure that the lawyers have been all over it to make sure that there's no direct allegations in the book, the insinuation is about as severe as could be. Given that he would have known that they padlocked the gates to the stand after kick off, burning the place down whilst packed would surely equate to an act of mass murder. Not a minor charge to lay on anyones head. Ultimately, what would be the insentive to do so with a stand already earmarked for demolition, and who wants to kill off a large chunk of their customer base? Whether well-meaning or on the make (and I'm prepared to give the benefit of the doubt given the level of personal tragedy the guy has obviously experienced), the world's full of people flogging books based on conspiracy theories - they frequently sell well, but that doesn't mean there's any real basis in reality to them.

Not sure if they question has been asked but why set fire to the stand during a football match with the police and television cameras present and also potential witnesses. Surely it would have been better to set fire to the stand at night to avoid loss of life?

I guess it would look very suspect if it just 'burnt down' when no one was there. I'd be surprised if it was a deliberate arson (you'd have to have the fire start somehow 'accidentally'). But I do generally agree, its a rather 'risky' approch to arson. But if you'd gotten away with it, say 8 times before, you'd likely think you'd do so a 9th and be more prone to taking risks.

If there is reasonable grounds to reopen the case, then the case should be reopenned.

the chairman had companies involved in 7 or 8 fires. The stand was due to be demolished after the game. Couldnt afford to build a new stand.

Listening to Sir Oliver Popplewell yesterday - sounding like one of Peter Cook's judge sketches - I wouldn't trust any conclusion he came up with.

Remember it was only 4 years ago he was slagging off Hillsborough families and telling them to show more dignity and stop all these conspiracy theories.

I would guess that most people probably pay someone else to do the deed. The kind of people who like burning things down for a living aren't too reliable about how they do it or stable (arson is kind of a fetish to a lot of arsonists).

And of course you probably don't want to know too much either (reasonable doubt and all that).
