Many references regarding Granddad (thanks, he sends his best wishes) but none regarding the percentage of our buck now taken.
There lies the problem.

Let me get this straight.... Your grandad is called buck and somebody is trying to take him away, a bit at a time...??

Why is MORE of every pound that i earn v what my granddad earned taken in tax?
He had a home that he could afford, schools, hospitals, roads etc etc. He had everything we have today but paid far less.
How so?

More public services, requiring a greater cost.

Depends how how old granddad is.

Tax revenues (incl NI) as a percentage of GDP haven't changed over the past 50 years:

1964/65:36.3%
1974/75:35.7%
1984/5:37.6%
1994/5:33.4%
2004/5:35.1%
2014/15 (est):35.8%

More regional, local and European government requiring multi-million pound buildings etc, more regulators to impose more and more stringent rules on all and sundry, more quangos to police various perceived thought crimes.

Lack of empire to rip off
More procedures illnesses covered on the NHS
Benefits for things that you'd never have got before

However I'm sure that I've read that we now overall have more disposable income that never before and it's been like that for about 20 years?
