I've just got back from a 2 week road trip between Vegas, LA and San Francisco.

Vegas, if you haven't been before, is difficult to describe. Personally I love it but it can get on top of you if you stay for too long. My favourite hotel there is the Hard Rock. It's probably a ten minute walk from the strip (taxis are cheap though) but the rooms are deluxe and good value for money. Also the hotel is not too manic to walk around which is nice when you wake up hungover. Additionally it's right beside the German Hofbrauhaus which I would strongly recommend paying a visit to if you like a beer. The best pool in Vegas though belongs to Mandalay Bay and is only accessible to guests (unless you blag your way in) so if you're planning to spend a decent percentage of the daytime drinking cockatils in the sun, I would consider that.

LA I didn't like at all. Perhaps I didn't quite get it or didn't see the right areas but to me it felt run down and as though the streets were highly punctuated with crazy, homeless people even for an American city. It does however boast the Universal and Disney parks if you're into that kind of thing and both are good fun. The Disney park is actually in Anaheim which itself is a very nice area and the Universal Park is in Hollywood. If you do the latter I would strongly advise paying the money for the VIP backlot tour which lasts a few hours and shows you sets from a huge range of popular TV shows and movies. Well worth it.

San Francisco was awesome, easily one of my favourite cities and in fact it impacted on me so much that I left considering applying for jobs there. For quite an urban city it is incredibly relaxed and friendly and an awesome place to walk around. I'd highly advise an early morning stroll down to Pier 39 to see the seals before you have breakfast and from there you can take one of the boat tours and visit the aquarium. The only issue with it is that it is quite expensive to stay centrally, although we did go at Easter which may have driven prices up. If you are driving whilst over there you absolutely must do the Pacific Coast Highway drive through Big Sur, the scenery is absolutely incredible.

San Francisco is the only place I've been to on holiday that I could imagine living.

One from left field here but perhaps ditch LA and put Chicago in instead. Chicago is my fav American city. Two years ago did the trip San fran, Vegas then Chicago so pretty similar to what you're doing but we only had two weeks so did one place left.

Tips:

Vegas- do a helicopter tour of canyon. Worth the cash as you get to see it but only spend half a day doing it rather than waste loads of time trekking or driving etc. really nice burger place at Mandalay bay I think- try the Kobe beef (best burger I've ever had)

San Francisco- Alcatraz is a must. We also ate at a place called cliff house (quite famous I think) which overlooks ocean and we saw Dolphins swimming about in the sea whilst we were eating which was cool. Walk around Union street- really nice part of the city. Avoid the tenderloin area as is vile. Don't be put off by the tramps- there are f***ing thousands of them (Almost ruins city a bit)

Would agree with most comments here. Concentrate on San Fran & New York, go to Vegas (but be prepared to either spend a lot of cash or get a bit fed up with it after 3 days). Keep LA to an overnight if you must but San Diego (3 or 4 hours south) is a much better option (can even sneak over the border to Mexico if you're insurance allows). But aim to spend the most time in SF and NY - they are both blinding.

If you can stretch your itinerary, I would recommend Grand Canyon and Monument Valley which are must see places and Meteor Crater is also interesting.
If you are only going there once in your life then you should definitely see the first two.

Because I've been on holiday there, but not the rest of the U.S perhaps.

C- for reading comprehension.

My 2 cents:

Never been to LA, and never want to go. Chalk me up as another recommending Chicago over LA. Great town - like New York but polite (the gun crime is all in the dodgy suburbs and nowhere near the city). In summer, Chicago is a more akin to a seaside town than a city.

San Fran is a cool town, but Mark Twain wasn't lying when he wrote "The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco". It can be 30F colder in "the City" than it is across the Golden Gate. By the way - make sure you cross the GG and see Sausalito, it's a cool little place. Do not try and drive anywhere in SF as the traffic will drive you into a murderous rage, and then you can't park when you get to where you're going. Do ride the trolleys for fun and for transportation. Don't forget Lombard(i) Street - it's just such an oddity. Go to Pier 39 to see the Sea Lions, but forget the pier itself unless you really want to go eat at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.

New York: too much to do, not enough time - but your choices will depend on your interests. Do go up the Empire State, but go very early as the lines become like a theme park as the day goes on and you'll end up in hour-long lines to go up AND come back down. Well worth it though. Ellis Island is interesting but don't bother getting off the ferry at Liberty Island or you'll be stuck there a lot longer than you want to be. Get your selfies with Lady Liberty from the boat as it goes by. Walk about as much as you can to see the sights - a city block is only about 100 yards so 10 blocks is just a shade over 1/2 a mile. Ground Zero is very moving.

Vegas is a blast and you can have a fabulous time even without gambling. The casinos themselves are tourist attractions and just mindboggling as to the scale and detail. The clanging of fruit machines will grate on you by the third day if not before. Fremont Street is worth the cab ride. FYI, the Grand Canyon tours from Vegas only go to the bottom end of it but not to the main part that you've seen in all the photos. It's still good, but its not the "real" thing - so try to add Arizona to your trip if you want the full GC experience. Bonus: you get to point and laugh at all the seppos going to see the old London Bridge thinking it's Tower Bridge.

Last tip: I have used priceline a bunch of times around the US and I have never been disappointed. Just make sure that you start with very narrow offer parameters (and a stupidly-cheap price) so that you have room to expand when your early offer(s) don't get taken up.

The fact that you are looking to travel very soon makes priceline a very good option for you.

I actually live near Yosemite in Oakhurst. I would suggest dropping LA too, unless you wanna hit Universal or Disney/California Adventure. Depends what you like, there's some real cool places around the Yosemite area, wineries, old mining towns and some cool history. Through Yosemite to Mammoth you got biking, hiking and fishing etc. Death valley if you can be a pretty awesome loop if your driving.

In San Fran, head east from Fishermans Wharf following the Embarcadero for a good 10 mins and you'll come to Pier 23 Cafe. A superb bar overlooking the bay that seems be off the radar for most tourists*. I tended to start most evening off in there - one of my most favourite bars on the planet!

They have a band on Sunday afternoons and it's heaving.
