Interesting that Jaws came from a book. Just need Moby Dick 3D now.

There needs to be a comprehensive list of books which you should bypass and go straight for the film.

That said, there are some stories which should be skipped in any medium. I can only be winning in having saved a week of my life in avoiding Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings. And that's just the films.

On the other hand, I feel having watched Trainspotting first enriched the reading experience. Knowing the characters from their style of language before they've been introduced is pretty cool.

I was disappointed with the film having read the book first. Two scenes really let it down. Firstly, the scene in which they shoot the skinhead's dog is truly funny in the book whilst in the film they skip over it very quickly but they may be due to our politically correct age. The second scene which let it down badly is when Begbie throws his glass over the balcony and then goes down to sort it out. In the book this is eye watering comedy but it gets somewhat lost in the film.

Cynic or realist? It's a fine line!

Shawshank Redemption - average book made into a great film

I believe I am the only person who thought the film was absolute pants especially in comparison to earlier Hollywood prison dramas.

Your beliefs are incorrect (me & mongo give it a slating in the link). There's a few of us Kerm - I often enjoy reading the 'Hated it' reviews on IMDB (where it remains the no1 top rated film)

A fairly enjoyable but forgettable and flawed film that isn't a patch on any of the movies it attempted to plagiarise. Over-rated doesn't nearly cover it.

I thought Hannibal was a fantastic read and a woeful film. I suspect Shantaram might meet the same eventual fate as Johnny Depp has his hands on it.

As an aside, what did you think of the book?

I saw it through to the bitter end but got so bored with him about a third of the way through.

I loved it mate but there were definitely some parts that were gruelling to say the least. However I thought overall those were outweighed by some of the descriptive passages that were stunningly written and considering that, as I understand it, it's largely based on real events it made some of what occurred pretty amazing.

So true! Completely misses everything the book has and is decidedly average. Di Caprio was a terrible choice.

A rarity is Ian Fleming and early Bond movies. Both as good as each other. Obviously the books are a bit deeper, well written too, but Connery's Bond and the scripts don't fail the author.

The books paint a much darker and nastier Bond, much more of a necessary evil man, hard drinking, misogynistic and borderline sociopathic than any of the Bonds until Daniel Craig (Casino Royal) managed (Noteworthy I thought that Goldeneye had more a nod to the Bond of the novels, than the movies).

I finished Diamonds are Forever this week and have From Russia With Love to start next. I'd be permanently sozzled if I drank as much as Bond does every day. Shame it's not as easy to get hold of benzedrine these days, another of his preferred tonics and quite an effective sharpener by the sound of it.

Fight Club - love the film. Binned the book after struggling with the first few chapters.

Would like to see Inherent Vice as I read the book a few years ago and loved the hippy vibe would like to know if the film lives up to it.

Couldn't disagree more. Loved the film (watched it before reading) and love the book.

Watership down was a fantastic book but the calibre of acting by the rabbits in the film left a lot to be desired!

I thought Anal Karenina was a better film than Tolstoys' scribble - meatier.

Hahaha the film is probably as good as the book, but the book is very different, much less 'aw look at the poor bunnies' and more 'Greek drama'
