In UKIPs first general election, UKIP stood 17 candidates who averaged around 257 votes each. None of them got their deposits back.
In the 1995 by-election in Islwyn, UKIP who polled 289, were beaten by the Monster raving looney party.
They were beaten by socialist Labour in 96 in the Barnsley by-election.

Whilst I concede that TUSC only scored minor votes in the election, they did have enough of a base to stand enough candidates to warrant a PPB, something UKIP didn't manage in their first general election.

If anything, I'd say that TUSC fared better in their first GE than UKIP did in theirs.

A fully formed UKIP came about in 1993 and first stood in the 1997 election polling 105,722 votes for 194 candidates (545 average) and did not lose all their deposits. They of course did far better in the EU elections, quickly winning seats.
