its our fault as usual.
I love the 'illegal war' bulls***.

tell that to the families of relatives murdered by the filth, in Tunisia today.
Its becoming a common event now.
sleep walking into far worse.
(prefer hoofs antidote.)

Explain to me why "illegal war" is bulls***? Explain to me how it was legal

As for "tell that to the families" nonsense. It is precisely the blundering around the middle east shooting at people with no strategy as to why and what might happen afterwards that has led us to this mess. To think that the next step might be to keep doing it ...well. What was Einsteins definition of madness? Keep doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

If I were you I would be getting my phone out no and start apoligizing

not that simple though is it.
the illegal war bull. is dragged out ad nauseum by people of a left wing slant.
Handwringers.
we've always killed each other & I expect always will, its a case of recognising a serious threat.
This ones got teeth and it'll get worse.
A part of the UK population only wants our resources, the land, the infrastucture etc.

tell that to the families -nonsense eh.
insulting.
while you post something very clever, I'm off for a cold beer.

Kids, tired of being bothered by your pesky parents?
Then leave home, get a job & pay your own bills, while you still know everything.

So is the war legal or illegal? Or don't you care. Any country can invade any other country. It matters because we left the vacuum into which the terrorists crawled into and are thriving. It also matters because it seems to me that your only plan is to keep doing the same thing

It has got teeth and it maybe more ruthless than anything we have seen before. We need friends. I am not sure what you mean by "a part of our population. only wants.." But we need allies if we are to defeat a particularly vicius enemy

I'm off for a cold beer. Good Plan

We have to stop fannying about. We need to get in and start wiping this scum off the earth.

Modern day Nazis, except now everyone who's not a muslim is a 'Jew'

The problem is how do you do it?

I'm glad Churchill didn't say that during WW2

That's exactly what he did, he said 'how do we win' after Dunkirk, formed the SOE and restructured militarily.

We did that in Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan. Look how well that turned out. Why then are we surprised when, from the chaos, it comes back and bites us.

Technically speaking, those actions actually played a major role in the creating the environment of IS. Two of those countries knocked over were specifically anti-Islamist states (Iraq and Libya).

This is like a cancer.

At some point we've got to "treat" it.

Up to now we've been applying plasters.

Hit 'em hard and take no prisoners.

Also for the boat people.... station warships off the coast and turn back all boats laden with refugees and so called asylum seekers. Deal with traffickers and smash their boats.

Sounds harsh, but we've no room or resources to look after these people.

If necessary we need to take over these rogue states and return them to normality.

ISIS and other terrorist groups are just exploiting a vacuum and causing unrest which motivates normal people to want to flee and seek refuge in Europe.

If we ignore this it won't go away.

You realise those people are being forced out by IS and Islamic movements (for the most part). Those refuge Libyans were among the loyalist factions of Gaddaffi's regime, which was hated by Islamists.

One option would be to arm them, train them and prepair them for taking back their country. Similar to Iraq, if the UK and US get directly involved it would splinter the tentative alliance between Kurds, Sunni and Shia that are fighting against IS

Invading these countries, will just move us into their battlefields and suck us into numerous civil wars like Iraq and Afghanistan, resulting in increasing support for IS.

Especially in Syria. The problem is, to eliminate IS in Syria, would likely mean supporting Assad's regime and Hezbollah.

I think Tux is right. How do people think ISIS became armed, and trained, and whose interests does the destabilisation of the Middle East/North African region best serve?

I think the question that may have to be asked is when do we step in to try to stop ISIS? If they decide to attack Turkey, for instance, and Turkey asks for military assistance should we ignore their plea?

If we do and then ISIS move to the next country, perhaps Bulgaria or Greece, do we ignore their pleas for help?

We can't. Since all three are NATO members, all any one of them has to do is invoke Article 5 and everybody else in the Alliance are OBLIGATED to join the fight. NATO have already stated firmly that this would be the case.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realise that. Would the same apply to Bosnia? Also would it allow NATO to follow ISIS back into Syria if Turkey were invaded or is it purely a defensive agreement i.e. push ISIS out of Turkey and no more?

I do think the "war in Iraq" was dodgy.

Post 9/11 the "war on terror" was used as an excuse to invade Iraq (whose regime ,however despicable, was nothing to do with salafist jihadism) and we screwed up with no coherent post toppling Saddam strategy..

"We have also manipulated lots of things overseas for our own ends for a long time.

You reap what you sow.

But, I do not buy the line that that intervention in Iraq explains or justifies people all over the place now (in the name sometimes of ISIS) but in many cases being a "local group" that has decided to "affiliate" either genuinely or for PR,whether in Tunisia, Nigeria, pakistan or France.

In so much as "the west" has any blame of this type,I think it relates more to the crazy short termism of the US (supported by the UK) having encouraged ,armed and supported "salafist jihadis" in about early 80's when they wanted them to topple the regime in Afghanistan. That, and turning a blind eye (for profit) to countries like Saudi spreading the pernicious influence of this strain of salafism globally by spreading the underpinning ideology through massive funding of mosques and religious education worldwide.

This strain of salafist jihadism is an evil political ideology. We are not blameless. But,an argument of whose interests does it suit that today's incident in Tunisia (and the one in France? and the ones in France earlier this year)took place and will take place again,or an argument its somehow all to be blamed on Iraq and/or us/The US,is miles off and too simplistic IMO.

Answers? Complex and multi faceted and I wouldn't claim to be able to trot them out.

I would think a starting point is to try to properly understand one's "enemy" to work out how to counter it,and how to counter it without driving a whole load more people into its arms who wouldn't otherwise go there.Short-termism has got "us" into enough trouble already. The desire for a knee jerk response may be understandable but is not always the best long term bet.

Edit: But that's just my opinion.
