Excellent speech from Cameron; he said a lot of things that have needed saying for a long time. Just hope he does what he says and it is not all spin.

It was an interesting speech, although the tiring tendency to suggest that Iraq isn't significant, because 9/11 was pre-Iraq, suggests a kind of 'Islam is one thing' rhetoric (Al-Queda and IS are unaligned, and without Iraq there would be no ISIL / ISIS or IS).

Good speech in general though. Hopefully it will apply to all forms of extremism that is built around violence.

And immediately opposed by various groups who imply this will exacerbate the problem.

Particulary infuriating when you hear comments about 'us and them'.

How about you make the extremists 'them'?

I'm by no means suggesting that communities act to harbour these people but I find it hard to believe that all these lunatics just turn up to worship and keep their mouth shut.

It wouldn't be immediately obvious if a friend was planning soemthing (I recall the recent church shooting in the US where the perpetrator previously discussed it, which was perhaps a giveaway) but where you understand their cause it should make intentions more transparent. If you disassociate these beliefs from your own, then disassociate these people, and call the police.

This bit was very important

0 Extremism can seem exciting, especially to young people.
0 People can be drawn from non-violent extremism to violent extremism.
0 Extremists are overpowering other voices within Muslim debate.
0 Failures of integration allow extremist ideas to gain traction.

The last bit is interesting, because this also needs the media, government and society itself to change, Muslim and non-Muslim.

Odd really then that we allowed thousands of Muslims into our country with no attempt to integrate them when it was obvious given the situation in the World and the nature of religion, that this would become a problem before too long.
It's so short sighted that it is almost like someone planned it that way deliberately.

Excellent speech from Cameron; he said a lot of things that have needed saying for a long time. Just hope he does what he says and it is not all spin.

I concur. It's about time these things were said. No more pussy footing around. Like you say, I hope he does what he says and it's not just window dressing.

I'm not really sure the UK gov (this or the prior) could be said to be pussy footing around. Labour Introducted anti-terrorist legislation* including secret trials, detention without trial, rendition of suspects, torture, committed the UK troops to Afghanistan, invaded Iraq etc.

Hardly pussy footing at all.

* Labour introduced more anti-terrorism legislation than the entire UK history of the 'troubles' saw.

Unfortunately, for Labour, but not UK Nationals, a lot of this was overturned as unlawful legislation.

Here we are then living in this Orwellian nightmare, yet the likes of Choudhury has not been subjected to a secret trial, detained without trial, renditioned or tortured - how come?

No idea, he's been investigated at least twice, so maybe you should take it up with the CPS or Special Branch. Notably a number of groups he's formed have been banned under anti-terrorist law for what they have said.
