They should, after all you don't want convicted rapists, murderers etc. Of course we should maybe have actually invested properly in assuring that, rather than simply ignored a massive problem for 20 years because it would cost.

Border control seems to be something that all governments of all types have never really bothered with.

What happens is that they kill and maim each other and end up under the control of evil dictators like Mugabe.

Other than Mugabe, can you give any other current dictators of formor colonies?

Nicola Sturgeon in Scotland.

The reason that everyone wants to come here is that they know we have a generous benefits system, lax borders that you could drive a bulldozer through un-noticed and soft politicians who are scared of their own shadow and are petrified of being branded racist. Some people are so ashamed of our illustrious past that they denounce everything that is great about Britain and are hell bent on changing the social make up of this country. These politicians are usually the left leaning kind.
They should remember that this country has done some great things, we won battles that we probably shouldn't have, we punched well above our weight. We had great inventors, scientists and engineers, but just because the left is ashamed to be British we have this ludicrous situation where we can't control who's coming in. Blair and Brown should be shot for deliberate dereliction of duty the way they abandoned the borders of this country. The damage is now irreversible.

We really don't. In order to claim UK benefits you have to have worked here for at least three years or be considered for Asylum (those considered candidates for Asylum are forbidden by law from employment in the UK, meaning the state necessitates paying them welfare benefits - irrespective of how qualified they actually are).

The UK Borders are much harder to get through than almost any of the European countries, the problem has been that our Border forces have been using an antiquated system that was supposed to have been replaced by 1996 - its was finally replaced at the end of 2014, and even that system is just a fix. The UK has also always been reluctant to become directly involved in the idea of a European police force and databases etc.

We're exceptionally fortunate we're an island nation and points of ingress are limited.

Problem of the UK, we often claim we want something, but then we never actually want to pay for it (which applies to left and right wing).

A false argument, because the UK, wouldn't look after its own more, even if every migrant magically vanished over night.

People tend to romanticize the past, but in the 70s, 80s and early 90s, when immigration was much lower, we were no more looking after our own than we are now. Its just a convenience where immigrants get the blame. After all, Governments don't want to admit that all those tax cuts in the 80s, paid for by NHS cuts in mental health via the care in the community act resulted in a massive spike in homelessnes

We cut services when immigration was lower, does that mean we'll spend more when it increases?

You're not expecting to elicit any agreement on the vile nationalistic notion that we should look after 'our own' are you?

We all know our poor are only the victims when the rich are the perpetrators.

Obviously I'm not looking for agreement from those whose politics.....If carried out....Would in real terms lessen the practical life chances of the poor here.

No, I don't agree with that.

The whole concept that looking after your own is wrong is well......Ok mate.....What did your mother do with you?.....Why didn't she take in the poorer kid down the street and share bedrooms? The concept is the same and it's ridiculous in my view.

According to the World Health Organisation, life expectancy at birth for Zimbabwean men is 37 years and is 34 years for women, the lowest such figures for any nation.

80% of people in Zimbabwe do not have what could be described as a real job.

But of course you on the left are blind to these facts because Mugabe is black, and an 'anti-imperialist'. Your usual double standards apply.

You could not be more wrong. To suggest I am "blind" because Mugabe is "black" and "anti-imperialist" .It shows you haven't got a clue what I actually think, viz your wanton ignoring of my description of Mugabe as a "cnut".Just a projection of your own multiple prejudices.

Your life expectancy figures are many years out of date and at the time were seriously influenced by an aids epidemic, something perhaps not even you could blame on the rulers not being European. According to the WHO,life expectancy as of 2013 was in fact 56 years for men and 61 for women, and certainly not the lowest in the world,as you incorrectly stated in your biased prejudice.

Its adult literacy rates since independence lead Africa.

As UNESCO has put it:

"In 1980 the new government of Zimbabwe inherited a system of education that was
racially biased and unequal in both governance and financing as well as the quality it
rendered to the different racial groups. For example, the colonial settler government made
European education compulsory and therefore offered universal education, spent as much
as 20 times more per European child than the African child. Mainly missionaries rather
than government provided education, for the African child."

Post independence, between 1980-89,primary and secondary school enrolments expanded by 79% and 841%
respectively. University enrolments increased by about 300%.Primary school education was made free. This resulted in gross admission rates shooting
to well over 100%. By the end of the first decade of independence, Zimbabwe had
achieved universal primary education.

Yes,it was all so much better in the good old days before independence of Smithy and his pals. To use an analogy (since we know you like comparing modern day politicians to Stalin and the like) ,for Zimbabweans,Mugabe may be Putin plus plus, but the "good old days" were more like uncle joe stalin for the average inhabitant.

No, we just cut services and spending. The reality is that we, as a collective whole, want to look after our own, provided we don't actually have to pay for it. The solution of governments since the 80s, has generally been cuts, tax cuts and stealth taxes.

Then the public complains, that services are s**t, so the approach generally is to shift spending around, or put the blame on parts of society, rather than resolve the problem.

Wow, I didn't realise Zimbabwe was such an attractive utopia. I'm surprised the asylum seekers in the Med and at Calais are not clamouring to go there - any ideas why not? Perhaps Bob should stand for leadership of the Labour Party so they we can benefit from his wise leadership, or perhaps he is not left wing enough? I expect he might lose one or two gay votes too.

Zimbabwe, things were so bad in the 80s and 90s, that black people were seeking asylum in South Africa.

I'm literally foaming at the mouth.....If I look in the mirror I've no doubt that my eyes would be swiveling.

In polite response to this.....No thanks.

But why?

Another debate, I know, but if not for this sort of thing, what is the EU for?

Why?

Control of our own immigration is why.

We should take a set number of valid asylum cases that relates to our capacity to provide for them.

I'm not in for the race to increase the disadvantage for our own poor to provide for other country's poor.....Beyond a set amount we can cope with.

Are you aware of the size of waiting lists for social housing in this country?

The poor here are being constantly f*cked as it is.

Isn't that precisely what I'm suggesting? A set number or percentage, meaning no more do we have people camping out in Calais to get over here (because it will make no difference where they apply in relation to where they end up)

I think its very important to distinguish between Asylum cases, and people who are intending to enter the UK illegally. A lot of the people trying to smuggle themselves into the UK via Calais are people who have been returned from the UK Ports or rejected Asylum in France, and gone on the run.

Most of these people won't be getting into the UK and claiming asylum, they'll be going to work illegally.

and those ones can obviously f**k right off!
