The DVLA website (and every piece of paper they've ever sent out) states that You must inform the DVLA of medical issues etc. And that You must surrender your licence because of a medical condition, or if you don’t currently meet the required standards for driving. He knew full well he was and is not fit to drive, anything, for a living.

I can't see how the families of the deceased aren't demanding charges be brought though.

They made the decision before the inquiry even commenced. The driver didn't disclose his, very patchy, driving history and tendancy to black out. The council didn't get a reference for him.
The necessity of earning a living, either way its a very negligent decision, as he should have been medically pensioned off as a bus driver
He shouldn't be doing that job and he shouldn't have put himself forward for that job. Simple as. I'm not trying to defend him, his decision clearly was stupid and lethal, but people don't think in such clear ways about themselves and risks and jobs. They tend to dismiss the risk increasingly as they get away with it. Similar to how drunk drivers think, they'll be alright and most usually are, and generally are more concerned with not getting pulled over, than causing an accident.

One of the families of the victims intends to make a private prosecution, since Scotland's Crown office still refuses to do so. Real classy that. Passing on all the time, cost and effort that will take to a family because they can't be arsed to back down from their original position, say they got it wrong and seek to carry out justice for them.

I also fail to see how a series of criminal prosecutions aren't the outcome.

I find it amazing that the jocks decided this was an "accident and that no charges would be pressed" when they hadn't even bothered to investigate the circumstances. If I could find the original thread about it you'll see that my first instinct about the incident has now been proved so.

The bloke is clearly a self centered grade A cnut of the highest order. For me he should be tried for manslaughter, he may not have intended to kill, but as a result of his actions he did, 10 years per life he took. He should die inside. Also a quick check on the DVLA website reveals: DVLA require existing lorry drivers to have a medical at the age of 45 and then every five years until the age of 65. After 65, the medical has to be done every year. So the question has to be asked how was this condition missed ? and if it was why and how. At the end of the day you can rationalise his actions all you want, he killed 6 people and injured 15 more through his own selfishness. Lock up. loose key.
