Thinking about doing a course? Was wondering if anybody had any experience of these? If so, what were the positives and negatives and did you get the desired outcome afterwards?

Hated the damned thing. Had to suffer course after course of the most difficult subjects waiting to get to the interesting stuff like 'White Horses' and 'Robinson Crusoe' Mind you that was my own fault as I used to get up really early aged 7.

I'd like to do a course but while it offers cost and time savings over attending a university, there are drawbacks namely in reputation and the lack of other campus based activities.

Thanks guys. I want to gain a bit more knowledge in order to change careers, but can't really afford to go to uni full time. Obviously there are evening courses I could go to, but these seems a bit more time consuming. From what I've found so far most of the people I have spoken to have positive things to say, its just the social side of things that seems to be lacking really.

I'm two 60 credit units away from graduation. Generally my experience is that its pretty good, but no where near the value that they place on it now. The tutorials and Day Schools at first were interesting, but essentially pointless, and other than my first tutor, I'd say their capacity as 'university level tutors' was questionable at best, and ranged from helpful to damaging. Its really a lottery as to whether you'll get a decent tutor, or one who's just banking the extra cash. If you're lucky you get a PHD student, if you're unlucky its an A-Level Teacher. That said the textbook and online material in support of the texts has been excellent, and the online library is fantastic. Its now on tuition fees basis, of 5500 per semester, which means a 60 credit unit will cost 2700, which is a p*ss take. If you can do a degree part time at a University instead, you'll benefit a lot more than OU Distance Learning. But the OU is not worth 5k a semester (or 2700 per 60 credit unit). At around the grand mark, it was probably fairly priced. You can of course get a student loan for the course, but you will still be paying that back.

The OU is really time consuming, if you haven't had any experience of higher education, if you want to get results back. I'm finishing off a Psychology and Criminology Degree, and had already studies Psychology 15 years ago, at university. I was still probably averaging about 4-6 hours a week, without really considering exam preparation and essay writing. The OU is actually a lot more work I found than University was (although I spent more time at Uni than OU study time). If you can, go to university part time, do that instead, as you'll gain access to professional lecturers, researchers and post graduate tutors, and socially interaction is much higher with other students and faculty staff. Also in terms of getting a 'new job' its questionable whether a degree will make much difference. Its really really hard to study a subject you're not really interested in.

My girlfriend just finished a 5 year course on there. It was very time consuming and she felt stressed but she has passed and she was generally very happy with it. One big positive she has derived from it is that it does look quite good to an employer that you've taken your own time and motivation to complete a qualification whilst still earning a wage. If I had the spare cash I'd definitely study for an OU qualification but unfortunately the courses I'd want to do (perhaps a degree in Maths) would be unlikely to be significantly beneficial in my career to ever pay for the course.
