Johnny Byrne tribute

My tribute to the great Johnny Byrne appears today. I know it's difficult for younger supporters who didn't see him play but I'm sure many will share my dismay at the removal of a fitting tribute, ceremoniously opened by the man himself. To my mind that is deeply disrespectful not just to him but also his family and it should be reconsidered. Please indicate if you would like to support another apt tribute being petitioned to club and council or organised by others. Thanks. Totally agree, very disrespectful and I'm sorry to say that CPFC 2010 are showing very little interest in our proud club's history. As another example they are dispensing with the historical elements in the programme, the WW1 articles and Picture Palace are going and Ian King is now going to write about an "old" programme, the oldest of which in the whole season is 1964. Going back to Johnny Byrne, his family came over last winter and wanted to see a game while they were here. The club c#cked that up and forgot to print anything in the programme till a few weeks after the family went back to South Africa. Whereas, at West Ham, the family got the red-carpet treatment. Still, we have �10m players now so we can't complain. Zaha, Williams, Murray, Ambrose, Scannell. A 5-man forward line who scored 3 goals in 10 minutes on 27th September 2011 at .......................

Cannot believe that one of my boyhood heroes (I started going to Palace in the 1960-61 season) is being eased into the background of history. I suppose the same thing has happened to Peter Simpson to a certain extent, and he was our top scorer ever. It should be remembered that there was life before the Premier League, and that crowds would come to games in the lower divisions to watch exciting players like Johnny Byrne. Incidentally, it should be remembered that Vic Rouse, Palace's then goalkeeper, was the first 4th Division player to win a full international cap (for Wales).

Cannot believe that one of my boyhood heroes (I started going to Palace in the 1960-61 season) is being eased into the background of history. I suppose the same thing has happened to Peter Simpson to a certain extent, and he was our top scorer ever. It should be remembered that there was life before the Premier League, and that crowds would come to games in the lower divisions to watch exciting players like Johnny Byrne.
Incidentally, it should be remembered that Vic Rouse, Palace's then goalkeeper, was the first 4th Division player to win a full international cap (for Wales).

However it's really sad to read that the suite dedicated to his memory and bearing his name has been removed. I've always been proud of this Club as it's been my belief that it always pays deep respect to it's past Player's but this situation is deeply disrespectful! Johnny was in my opinion the best Player that's ever played for CPFC, not only played but scored goals for England and one who never got bigger than the Club. I enjoyed reading your tribute to Johnny and like you I remember him with affection as a Player and a wonderful young man who was proud to wear the claret & blue.
Johnny was really approachable and happy to stop for a chat and talk the game with whoever he bumped into, never letting the notoriety go to his head.
I also missed out school to go to Wembley on a wednesday afternoon (1961) to watch him play against Mexico but Derek Kevan was a late replacement much to my annoyance.

However it's really sad to read that the suite dedicated to his memory and bearing his name has been removed.
I've always been proud of this Club as it's been my belief that it always pays deep respect to it's past Player's but this situation is deeply disrespectful!

Johnny was in my opinion the best Player that's ever played for CPFC, not only played but scored goals for England and one who never got bigger than the Club.

He deserves better than this!

........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history.....................

Thank you I greatly appreciate that and I totally agree with your comments. I tried approaching the club in the proper way but in the end I had no option other than to go public. I still hope that they and/or the council will do something. Jeff Astle was the same era and he is lauded by WBA albeit with extenuating circumstances.
