I don't think he needed a visa to visit the UK. Australians don't need a visa to travel to the UK in transit or as tourists.

Provided he wasn't planning to stay more than six months, and perform no more than one month of invited work (such as if you're invited to give lectures etc), he required no visa.

He'd been refused a renewal of a working visa in Sweden.

According the .gov site for Visas, Australians don't need a visa for as a tourist for less than six months - Providing they're not working, can sustain themselves, aren't planning to get married and haven't previously been refused a UK visa or have been deported.

Also according to Wikipedia, if he was born before 1983 he doesn't need a visa to live here or work here (as he'd qualify for Right to Abode as a member of the commonwealth). I don't know how true that actually is though.

He'd need a parent with British citizenship who was born in the UK.
