Lance Armstrong was a champion for Cancer Research, and a cheating scumbag

apparently mother theresa and florence nightingale had a nasty mean streak that was well known to those close to them.

servants working close to Princess diana could confirm that her public angel persona was not what they all remember.

Jimmy Savile, charity fundraiser

the catholic church....say no more, all is forgiven

cecil Rhodes scholarships to Oxford, paid for in blood.

the Conquistadors, valiantly bringing christianity and the love of jesus to the new world ( while stealing everything in sight )

Bono - africa - say no more.

Bob Geldorf - africa - failed pop star

the charity industry, say no more.

Cyril Smith - was often seen promoting charity events

Roy Keane - guide-dogs for the blind

Rolf harris - various charities supported

Many of the american twentieth century Billionaire Industrialist tycoons - probable psychopaths, charity sponsors.

you may call me cynical or jaundiced. But is it always good people doing good deeds in the withering stare of the public eye ?

ps this is a joke thread, i have hidden charity fundraising scratch-cards among all the dead bodies under my patio :-)

People who go to exotic places in the name of charity e.g. walking the Great Wall of China, climbing Mt Kilimanjaro etc etc.

If you want a holiday, good, go on one.

If you don't, donate what you would have spent on one to a charity of your choice and don't tell anyone about it.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Yes they do, I am sure that there's a name for it where it eases people's conscience (cue Jamie)

There was a BA pilot who was molesting kids in Africa whilst raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for them.

Yes, they always have done, especially when its an organization (criminal or otherwise). Typically I would say its more about obfuscation and buying protection.

Organised crime bosses and leaders often are also heavily involved in local areas, because they're essentially buying 'good will' and influence.

Jimmy Savile, for example, would probably not have been able to get away with what he did, for so long, if he hadn't built up his charitable reputation. It allowed him access to influential friends, and that is probably more likely to be the reason why investigation and allegation were turned away or locked down, because those people were protecting their record of association (or simply helping out a friend they couldn't believe was being accused, typically by people its easier to denigrate).

There is a reason why those groups used childrens homes etc because of the vulnerable position those children are in, and the way that those organisations can become dependent on the abusers largesse.

They probably believe they are good people, few people believe they are bad people, even when doing terrible things and take pride in their 'good works'. But in reality its how they get away with it. They aren't necessarily working on a conscious level either, the simple fact is that their charity work, which they might do for all the right reasons, generally makes them harder targets.

There are some interesting forensic papers, which generally show that a lot of people who get away with crimes for a long time, perform a number of different counter measures, often unintentionally, and they then realize they work, and because we tend to stick with what we know works, they refine them.

Those 'prosper' tend to either methodically plan everything, those who completely don't and those who are lucky to hit on the trends in both that led to getting away with it.

When you get to sociopathic behavior, its important to remember that sociopathic individuals who prosper are those who learn how to imitate other people, usually at first to fit in. So rather than being empathically friendly, they will learn how to pretend to be friendly and fit in.

Charity work may very well just be an extension of that. They see other people prosper and gain attention, plaudits and praise for charitable works, and so they do the same. They have learned that its better for them to be liked, than not liked. If you're involved in terrible things, which you know they will 'hang you for' its better to be very liked. Serial killers are notorious for being quiet, well liked, neighbours who cause no problems or fuss - because those that are successful are those that blend in.

The question is how intentionally decided this is, or just a cognative function for survival. I doubt they actually sit down and think it all through, but that they subconsciously latch onto aspects expressed by other people, and find they benefit from them

You, of course, would know this more than most.

We all know that the 'celebrities' of today lend their image to charities to salve their liberal consciousness, when in fact they're total 5h1t bags who are full of their own self importance so YES.

And I thought I was cynical.
