Your list is great but those kinda obvious tourists places with the extreme heat and crowds and expense in July? Good luck.

The Athens I saw was a dump as previously mentioned but haven't gone to The Parthenon area.

eagleboi...Naples is probably the most dodgy city in Italy to visit as a tourist, the wife and I were there last summer and felt out of our comfort zone, unusual as we are seasoned european travellers.Nothing to do with the mafia more to do with gangs of youths hanging around the city and in the bars and cafes,if you do go keep anything expensive out of sight/keep cash and cards in your pocket not your wallet.Angelo a mate of mine who hails from Sicily also advises its a risky place and he should know.Sorry to upset any Neapolitans on the site.

If you get to Florence go to Pisa which is not far away...." the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a MUST to see.
The Eurail ticket as mentioned will be your best bet, overnight travel is fine but you will miss the beautiful scenery, especially in places like Austria.I would forget about Athens as this will take up a good deal of your time i.e. getting there and back from mainland Europe.
Also worth a visit is Berlin, and the Swiss Alps are stunning around Interlaken.

I was born in northern Italy, I've been once to Napoli (Neaples) and would NEVER go back again. I care for my life.
I might be biased, but I wouldn't suggest to anyone.

Blimey, thanks for the heads up guys! I thought TV shows and films of Gomorrah recently might have hyped it up a bit, but judging by your reactions, (especially Ian's - what happened when you went?) it seems a scary place!

Is it a poverty thing? Youth gangs similar to the problem we have here in Peckham, Hackney and Harlesden?

There can't be any gangs in Napoli because according to some of the right-wingers on here only blacks mug and stab and I believe them.

Just come back from 16 days driving round Slovenia and northern Croatia. Some incredibly beautiful places to see round there and its left me wanting to explore further around the area.I.e Southern Croatia, Bosnia H and Serbia and Montenegro.

Amazing landscapes and lots of history both ancient and modern and obviously good and horrific.

I remember Maradonna talking in a documentary about the difficult times in Naples in the 80s. Guess it's still in needing improvements

I work in Vienna and it is pretty cheap and a good base to visit Prague, Budapest and Salzburg - either by train on boat trip up the Danube.

I don't know if it has got miles more dangerous in the last few years but I'd have to say that I went a few years ago (maybe 2010) & loved it. It has a bit of an edge but not in a really scary way. It has an atmosphere a bit more like a Latin American city than a European one (again not in a favela sense, just in the same sense that people might say about somewhere like Brixton). It's not dissimilar to Palermo in that sense, if you've been there. It's a cool place with stuff to do and see in and around the town, decent bars, cafes & restaurants and nearby trips to places like Pompeii & Vesuvius. It's proximity to more relaxing locations on the Amalfi coast or one of the islands in the bay makes it a pretty good place to go, I'd say.

I was only there for about a week before travelling onwards but was going out late at night, walking round the city & using public transport etc. I guess that you are more likely to have your bag snatched there than in a lot of the type of places on the original list but if you take the sort of precautions that you are probably used to if you live in London then even that shouldn't be a problem. I am also sure that, like most cities, there are areas that you really would be better off avoiding but if there are, I avoided them! There were some areas round the outskirts that did have loads of rubbish out because of a strike but I think that this is better now & even then it was only an obvious issue in the outskirts of the city.

I went to Naples when staying in Sorrento because I particularly wanted to see a large collection of Titian paintings in a museum there. Boat across the Bay of Naples to the city which is a great way to arrive, then bus to the museum. People friendly on the bus told us which stop etc, then had to walk through a park which had a few youths playing football but had no hassle at all. They say "see Naples and die" and the people in Sorrento told us to be careful, but have to say I have felt far more uneasy in certain parts of South London. However, apart from the Museum and Naples Palace didn't think there was much else of interest.
