Apologies if this has already been covered but....can anyone explain why three nations that would be seeded in any normal competition (SA, Wales and England) are scrapping over two qualifying places. whereas NZ seem to be in a group (with all due respect to those teams) of "unseeded" nations. It seems a bit risky to have the hosts so likely to go out in the group stage. I'm not just wearing arrogant "England"- tinted spectacles as I accept they were outclassed by Oz, and love to see emerging rugby nations like Japan doing well, but England have a record of doing pretty well in the Rugby WC don't they. Seems a bit of a duff format to me.

Because Wales made an unholy Horlicks of the Autumn internationals three years ago and dropped out of the top 8 at exactly the wrong moment. This made us the unseeded team.

We are notoriously bad during the autumn so it's mildly surprising that we have done as well as we have.

Thanks for clearing that up!! Good luck to Wales, if only England had Warburton!

They do. He's called Fatty Armitage and he was European Player of the Year in 2014. Unfortunately, our all-knowing coaches refused to pick him because he plays his club rugby in France.

Ah well 5 mins left before we are put our of our misery....one small spark is I at least won a couple of bets with mates as I had us not to get out of the pool.

Beaten by a much better side tonight but with a whimper really....tonight and the Saffers v Scotland game showed how much behind the SH we all are....

Radical change needed in English rugby to fulfil its potential - which won't happen

I haven't heard a single pundit this morning -- Barnes, Back, Ryan, Greenwood, etc. -- say anything that you and I didn't write in this thread over the past 14 days, Sash. Entirely, completely predictable in the end. It pains me because I really do admire Bomber as a person but I think he has been more out of his depth over the past 18 months than any coach of a World Cup team in any sport that I can remember. Really, it's been embarrassing.

The pity is that this is shaping up to be a fantastic World Cup -- well, it already is that. Of the likely last eight, I would say only Scotland (or Japan) have absolutely no chance of winning it. Obviously, some teams are better than others but the other seven all have at least a shot at an upset. And unfortunately with England out, the non-rugby public will largely move on.

Oh well, I'm off to buy some leeks. I'm becoming officially Welsh for the next four weeks. This has the double advantage of added support for Hennessey, Ledley and Joniesta.

That's probably the worst thing Syd...if armchair pundits can see these issues a mile off how can't professionals that close to the game....just heard LD, Inverdale and GG talking about this like it's something new...LD even suggested we have gone from 'world beaters' to this....have I missed something? At which point have Lancasters England been world beaters ???

I think the answer to the first question is plain and simple a loss of nerve caused or compounded by a total lack of experience. The four English coaches had been them one season running a Premiership team between them (Lancaster, at Leeds) and that team was relegated. The assistant coaches were all novices to all intents and purposes. Put simply, they neither were nor are fit for the purpose.

From a friend before the game yesterday:
So, it turns out Kieran Bracken’s next-door neighbour is the senior partner at a City litigation law firm called Stewarts Law. Last night they held a RWC gathering which was hosted by Bracken. As part of the proceedings—after David “rent-a-gob” Campese had spent 15 minutes railing against everything in modern rugby—Bracken got hold of the mic and did a Q&A with injured England no. 8 Billy Vunipola! who had a beer in his hand and appeared to have a couple more inside him…

Bracken: when you were interviewed after the game against Fiji you said you didn’t know you’d scored the bonus-point try—that was a strange thing to say…
Billy: not at all. None of us knew bonus points were part of this world cup. No one had told us.

[…]

Bracken: what’s Stuart Lancaster like to work with as a coach?
BillyV: I don’t know.
Bracken: what do you mean?
BillyV: Stuart doesn’t coach the team, Andy Farrell does. I’ve never been coached by Stuart.
Campo, butting in: what effect has that had on the way the team plays?
Billy: he makes us play like a rugby league team.

(Campo then goes off on one about England’s terrible style of play is and how the RFU should just bite the bullet and hire an experienced international coach. To be fair, he’s absolutely spot on with that).

[…]

Campo: so what do you think about England picking Sam Burgess?
BillyV: it’s been disruptive. The whole squad is unhappy about it.
Bracken: WHAT? Why?
BillyV: Luther Burrell earned his place in the RWC squad and Sam didn’t. Luther should have been picked, not Sam.

[…]

Bracken: and how are you enjoying playing under Chris Robshaw?
BillyV: *shrugs shoulders, sips beer, says nothing*

So, that’s OK then.

Meanwhile Jake—who seems to have got himself quite close to the England camp—is saying that Mike Catt walked out of last week’s selection meeting and vowed not to return: seem Farrell is not only coaching the team but picking it as well…

That would sure explain a lot !!

Now the dust has settled a little I am struggling to actually pick any success stories from an England perspective from this train wreck. Apart from the obvious 10-12-13 cock ups, and the bizarre Line out decision against Wales, the scrum and Marler in particular has looked awful, the Aussies showed exactly what specialist 6 and 7's look like and what they should be doing and how poor we are in comparison by not having them.

The lack of composure, especially under pressure, the lack of leadership from top down, the lack of any kind of continuity in play, the swapping of 10's, the selection of Wigglesworth - probably the least dynamic of the 3 No9's, above Care, who for his faults would have given energy and go forward, the penalty count...I could go on and on...and I haven't even mentioned the players who should have been there but weren't...

Line out has been OK I guess...Watson showed he is a very good finisher and ermmm struggling for anything else...

Ok you guys understand a lot more about this than I do. But it seems to me England have 1) Enough good players to compete 2) Plenty of cash for facilities and coaching 3) Players that try really hard on the pitch 4) Fantastic home support. Seems like the raw materials are there so can only be lousy management, putting players on the pitch who've never played together, parachuting in rugby league players etc etc? Shouldn't we be getting in someone like Sir Clive to sort out the whole thing?

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. Yes

England, if they truly want to be able to fulfil the potential that a huge pool of players and shed loads of cash brings need a Southern Hemisphere coach...problem is the RFU wouldn't have it...

For me go reasonable young - Jamie Joseph for example or as has been suggested on here a battle scarred old hand like Graham Henry...I know one thing - we may not have done well under this WC under Woodward but we wouldn't have had this absolute debacle and certainly note a team of such fragile mentality (a hallmark of Lancaster's England is their ability to choke)

1. To some extent. The really good players in England are young...the mature group are not so good. We will have a very good team in 4 years time. Some of those players should have been blooded in this World Cup (Wade, Slade, Itoje etc.) and others are simply not ready yet.

2. Yes. But you can have all the cash in the world and it does you no good if you hire Andy Farrell to coach your team. This whole RWC has been a massive exercise in wasting RFU money (not least on Sam Burgess).

3. Trevor Aylott always tried really hard. Wonder whether he can play scrum half? If you're not good enough, effort doesn't really matter. And at this level, Bomber picked too many players who weren't good enough (compounded by the fact that they were poorly coached, too.)

4. Doesn't really make any difference. It's nice, but it doesn't put points on the board.

Yes, we need to get a professional, experienced top-level coach in (just like we should have done four years ago.) Ideally probably not SCW but a Nick Mallet, Jake White, Wayne Smith sort with maybe Rob Baxter as an assistant being groomed for the role in future.
