to me the situation in ferguson all summer is it in a microcosm , a trigger happy copper shoots some one , the case gets fudged . the local population are bound to get mad , they lost total respect for the local coppers and the authorities . America is in a pretty bad way , the gap between the have and have nots is huge and it isn't going to get any better That trigger happy cop had never fired a shot in his 5yr career as a police officer. If I were that copper I would do the same thing... If some massive dude hit me and grabbed my gun, I would do everything in my power to make sure I went home that night to my family. During the Ferguson riots.... a 4yr old girl was killed by a stray bullet in a gang drive by shooting... the very next day, they protested about a police officer shooting dead a criminal that attacked a police man.

Would it actually achieve much to be out protesting about the gangbangers, not really sure that they are accountable agents of the state and government. Of course there is a question of just how well that US policing and government law enforcement are doing if gang crime is so frequent an occurrence as to be one of the leading causes of poor youth in the US.

In situations where individuals are dealing with the police it's in the interests of both the general public and the police to have the whole thing filmed. It reassures people that justice is being served, removes ambiguity and helps to attract the right kind of people to the police force. That guy did us a favour filming himself knocking out a homeless person. It will help to get him removed from the streets. I don't think its a question of race to be honest, I just think that the history of racism in the US has left Black and Hispanic communities with a capacity to protest effectively. Police training in the US varies wildly, and screening is fairly poor, and the maintenance of that training can be terrible. A consequence of this is you also end up with people who aren't particually well disciplined, or trained, who may not be psychological or socially suited to police work and carrying lethal weapons in a country with a notorious history for use of guns. The problem isn't really the police, but with funding and recruitment. You see the same problems with corruption of prison guards in the US as well. The pay is poor (for the work), the training patchy to minimal, and the screening virtually non-existant, resulting in a potential 'perfect storm'. The problem of racism in the US police isn't that the police are inherently racist, but that its very easy for people who are racist to get into the police force.

Actually its not its heart disease, cancer, accidents, stroke and then homicide. Only around 4.5% of Black Male deaths are caused by homicide. However this is a terrifyingly high figure. Only Hispanics also include homicide as a top 10 cause of death (2.4%). Black males are the only group in the US in which homicide eclipses suicide and diabetes as a cause of death. Curiously, suicide as a cause of death among Black Males is surprisingly low, compared to other groups. Possibly due to the high prevalence of homicide. Between the ages of 15-34 homicide is the leading cause of death among young black males.
