The gravity of the situation, not that much, certainly not an existential threat to the country. The attacks in France, whilst horrific, are unfortunately an unavoidable consequence of the war on terror, and the allied campaign of bombing IS, even if its the right thing to do, they were always going to want to hit back. I don't see how surrendering legal rights and the provisions of English law that have existed since magna carta would be in anyway proportional. The UK has very stringent anti-terrorist legislation and powers anyhow. It would be ironic if we were to actually do more damage to the British way of life responding to a threat that didn't in anyway bear on the British freedoms and way of life. Its been a long problem of Europe that it doesn't really have a police body capable of cross country operation other than Interpol and its intelligence services operate on a 'friendly' rather than joined up manner. The EU presents the best option available for 'linking up Border Controls, Records, Intelligence, Investigation and Enforcement' against Terrorism, rather than more separation between memberstates. It might undermine some issues of the EU, definitely - but then European border controls have always been notoriously lax anyhow. I'd argue that it lends credenece towards the EU given that his act of terrorism, was planned in Brussels, and executed in France, by people who had travelled to Syria and back.

Its been a long problem of Europe that it doesn't really have a police body capable of cross country operation other than Interpol and its intelligence services operate on a 'friendly' rather than joined up manner.

The EU presents the best option available for 'linking up Border Controls, Records, Intelligence, Investigation and Enforcement' against Terrorism, rather than more separation between memberstates.

It might undermine some issues of the EU, definitely - but then European border controls have always been notoriously lax anyhow. The UK always had the advantage of being an island, which makes Border control much much easier.
