BBC Radio 4 Today Muslim Poll

More than two in five (46%) feel that being a Muslim in Britain is difficult due to prejudice against Islam.
Almost all Muslims living in Britain feel a loyalty to the country (95%). Just 6% say they feel a disloyalty.
Nine in ten (93%) British Muslims believe that Muslims in Britain should always obey British laws.
One in four (27%) British Muslims say they have some sympathy for the motives behind the attacks on Charlie Hebdo in Paris.
However, two thirds (68%) say acts of violence against those who publish images of the Prophet can never be justified while a quarter (24%) disagree.
Muslim women are more likely than men to feel unsafe in Britain.
One in nine (11%) British Muslims feel sympathetic towards people who want to fight against western interests while 85% do not.
Half (49%) believe Muslim clerics preaching that violence against the west can be justified are out of touch with mainstream Muslim opinion, while 45% disagree.

I'm more comfortable now that we have a more current and easily accessible poll of British Islamic attitudes than the old 7/7 statistics.

What do people think from these stats?

I think what they tell us, which any rational person would have known anyway, is that the vast majority of UK Muslims are normal people just going about their day and want no truck with the nutters, don't belong to their sect, and can't relate to them one jot.

The only seriously questionable one for me is the one about Imans and violence toward the West. I wish they had broken it down. Are they talking about genuine state military action against aggressors or terrorism? Bit perplexed with that one tbh.

How's your head feeling in that sand Kermy?

Eleven percent of a population of millions supporting the fight against their own society is a very serious problem.

Don't think much of statistics myself. Even the Imam ones aren't surprising to me.

It's always the same. Both the violent radicals and the bigots who generalise groups such as Muslims as being terrorists are in the minority. But small groups can have potential to do terrible things.

The press gets a sniff of 'anti-Muslim sentiment' across the UK, which there isn't and then stats, articles and commentaries are published on the situation.
I see a similarity with the situation in the 1970s against the Irish with the Guildford Four and Maguire Seven. In fact it may have been worse in terms of British contempt.

Nowadays you have facebook and other forms of social media. Facebook amateur politicians with their petty petitions and sharing of articles jump on an anti or desperately pro bandwagon to help them feel good about themselves or display outrage.

I ain't got nuthin' funny to say. Sorry.

Well let's stick up for the 89% then to make sure that the 11% does not go any higher.

Statistics are statistics.....If they are accurate representations a fair interpretation of them is the nearest we can get to truth on a matter.

We shouldn't dismiss the ones we don't like but accept the ones we do....At least not without a rational explanation as too why the statistics are wrong.

Who are these 'violent radicals' you speak of?

Who are these people calling all Muslims terrorists?

You refer to amateur politicians yet you are commenting yourself.....And you categorise their motivations and refer to their possible mental state...So is this not amateur psychotherapy?

So you think that you stop someone becoming a terrorist by being nice to them? By not referring to the other eleven percent...I'm not exactly clear as too what you mean Kermy.

How exactly do we stick up for the 89%? Surely they are no more worthy of being 'stuck up for' than the rest of the population who don't believe in supporting attacks on the west.

Hello, again, stirlingsays! I'm back to help explain how backward you appear to someone like myself who comes from a different country than you do. A country which is likewise full of scared/angry people grappling with the difficult-for-people-like-yourself issue of: "where did all these brown people come from, and isn't there something that can be done about it?"

I have no problem with someone's skin colour. Skin pigment has nothing to do with a person's actions or characteristics.

However, I do have a problem with people like you. I believe you like to introduce accusations of racism into the discussion to insult people and close down debate.

Due to this, I won't be replying to you after this. Not unless I notice a constructive change at least.

That's fine.

It always amazes me when cliches comes to life and only want to listen to echoes of themselves.

Carry on! Stiff upper lip in the struggle, stirlingsays!

And pardon me, I guess the issue for you specifically is:

"where did all these brown people come from, and isn't there something that can be done about 11% of those who responded in some fashion to some kind of survey that I sort of understand?"
