Although very callous there has been an explosion of type 2 diabetes in this country mainly because of obesity which now accounts for 10% of the entire NHS budget. When you consider we can't afford medicine for most cancer patients you have to ask what is fair?

I think I would rather adopt a European style system where you need some form of medical insurance and higher risk groups such as fat b******s would pay more

But in the long run those who are overweight will die earlier, like smokers, drinkers etc, and avoid the hideous costs of rare and late life disorders that are really really expensive (old age care costs make diabeties look tame as costs). Plus of course their pension burden is much lower.

So in truth, I'd say the opposite is true, healthy people with a long life expectancy really cost the NHS far more, than those with a unhealthy habits.

The myth is that obesity can be combatted solely by exercise, if its a problem maybe we should look to dealing with the problem at the point of provision. Fast food and packaged foods, and their availability - Notably sugar, a central nervous stimulant that is incredibly addictive.
