Given the performances of Wickham in the last 3 games isn't the role of the lone striker more about other things than scoring goals?

Of course a few goals would always be nice but it would be a bit harsh to replace him.

I think in the next 5 games we could be looking at a different situation, Wickham getting 2 goals in the next 5 would change the complexion a little.

He's been out injured a while and is just getting in his stride. And this is from someone who didn't want to sign him as I thought he was substandard.

Wickham and WH's performances recently have changed my mind.

Was listening to Rock and Roll football with Wrighty on the way home from the game and he was talking about no striker scoring for Palace. He said even if they're not prolific, getting just 10 goals this season from one of our strikers would probably mean a place or 2 higher in the league - Which right now would be Champions League!!!

Troy Deeney is a good example of a striker that focusses on mainly bringing others into play but also pops up with a goal or two. Frustratingly enough, Glenn Murray would have done this for us. Even in a limited role this season, I reckon Glenn would have 4 goals at this stage for Palace.

Obviously we just turned over a good team in Southampton and now everyone is saying Wickham doesn't need to score because he was strong and linked play well. But how many times do you see a team "turn over" another and yet the final result is still 1-0?

We should have won by 2 and what's more concerning is if it wasn't for a superb save from Hennessey in the last minute we'd all be so frustrated now and cursing 2 stolen points.

Again what's worrying is our goal wasn't a "normal" goal. It was good awareness from Bolasie and some magic from Cabaye to be in that position (Pard's said himself he shouldn't have been there). That could of very easily been a huff and puff game that we dominate and yet finishes 0-0.

So in short (sorry for rambling), we do still need our striker to contribute at least some goals this season.

Wickham is unlucky to still be without a goal. I was a skeptic, but he is looking really good.

I feel sure CW will shortly score and - together with YB and our mid field - produce enough to see us safely home this season. Main concern is if CW gets injured we could be back where we were prior to his recent return. I think any major additions will wait till Summer.

I'm sure Murray would have 4 by now, but he wouldn't have had a 2 month injury. Wickham's hardly on a huge drought, he's only played 5 or 6 games and has, off the top of my head, hit the post against Arsenal, forced two good saves against Southampton, a very good save against Everton, got 3 assists against Newcastle and was very impressive at Chelsea. He could easily be on 3 now with a little luck and from not many games that'd be good.

If he's creating chances for others, I don't care who gets the final touch. When the presence up front stops creating chances, then I'll be concerned.

Connor Wickham seems to be in a similar predicament to Benteke at Liverpool where they are utilised more for build up play and offering a physical presence to aim for against opposition defenders.

Of the two I would say Wickham is the far more effective at it. Against Southampton he had perhaps one clear cut opportunity from a peach of a ball from Cabaye and was only denied by a great save.

He does a good job of tiring central defenders as he doesnt just stay central, so it would be good to see if bringing Gayle on in the dying minutes of the game to use his pace would provide some late goals.

when pardew said 'we don't have to get that involved' ....that tells me no superstar striker worth 5 mill plus will be chased.

obviously I know fa. but I hope it's simply a smokescreen.

maybe even a young foreign CB from France or Italy too eh.

oooh motd on in 3 mins.

Or give Martin Kelly a chance.
