This is a rather pretentious position to take. Music is subjective as we all know,

None of the songs on that list are especially offensive and have sold millions. That means that in the cha ching sense these songs are very good indeed.

It has come to my notice that we always have the annual musical snobbery where by all the usual popular hits are trashed and some awful obscure never heard of, never want to hear again "alternative" Christmas song about vomiting or killing yourself is heralded as the best thing since Christmas pud.

Do me a favour.

If you want a less well know gem try "Christmas all over Again" by Tom Petty with Jeff Lynne producing. That is a proper song.

To an extent, its subjective as to whether you like it or not (I quite like the first B*witched album but it is s**te) - But there is definitely a difference between music as art and music as entertainment. The likes of the Velvet Underground will always be better than say 1 Direction.

Well indeed, but the distinction has to be drawn between talent or technical ability and showmanship.

Rock is about expressing passion and excitement and Hendrix was all about that but in terms of technical ability he is very average. He was more an innovator of rock guitar performance with a very personal style that others copied.
Yes, Maria Callas would probably set the bar for female singing but I would rather listen to Celine Dion. We all like what we like at the end of the day but that is a separate matter.

He is average in the scale of great guitarists but if you like what he does then great. I like him.

Try searching Tommy Emmanuel(Australian) or Richard Smith (English guitarist) if you want to hear real guitar virtuosity and there are many others. Nashville is full of great guitarists but if you like rock first an foremost then that is what you will migrate toward regardless. I like listening to Ace Frehley and he is very average.

I'd stand by this, the guy simply is an amazing guitarist, although he's never really been interested in playing professionally (ok better might be overstating it, but he can play Jimmy's stuff note perfect). That said, I'd rather watch Jimi strut his stuff and kick out the jams.

Blasphemy it is Bob! Everyone knows Hendrix, Clapton, Knopfler, Slash, Angus, Jimmy Page etc are rock guitar legends and deserve respect! Alright they don't play intricate flamenco or Rodrigo style guitar pieces but they are very talented guys.

Everyone knows Hendrix, Clapton, Knopfler, Slash, Angus, Jimmy Page etc are rock guitar legends and deserve respect!

Alright they don't play intricate flamenco or Rodrigo style guitar pieces but they are very talented guys.

All those guys are decent players but not in the upper tier of guitar playing. Knopfler is probably the best out of those technically and all are enjoyable but remember that you never really know who is playing the more intricate parts on recordings. It could be a session guy.

Respect has nothing to do with it. It's about reality.

All those guys are decent players but not in the upper tier of guitar playing. Knopfler is probably the best out of those technically and all are enjoyable but remember that you never really know who is playing the more intricate parts on recordings. It could be a session guy.
