When we signed Damo and Bolasie when were near the bottom of the Championship. Aren't we looking for a bit more proven quality now? If he signs and plays well fantastic, I think he has been poor for a while now and is a big gamble.

How can you call him a "big gamble" when you have no idea what he'll cost? If we get him for a small fee, he's not going to be a gamble at all, is he?

Damo made his debut for us on October 4th 2012 against Burnley. The win took us to fourth place in the table. Is that "near the bottom" of the Championship these days?

Caulker is a former international and once very high quality prospect whose career has been derailed by playing for two simply awful clubs under clueless owners and managers. Yes, he hasn't shone. Want to name a single Cardiff or QPR player who has recently? The worst that can be said of him is that he's made some pretty poor decisions about who to join. Plus, he's still young. OK, he hasn't displaced Van Dijk or Fonte at Southampton but they're both quality players; that doesn't tell us he's not any good.

There is everything to like here. Experienced, talented, the right age but career a bit off track. He has exactly the sort of profile that often succeeds at Palace and he's really not likely to cost an awful lot.

A bit worrying that he may also be playing badly at Southampton, but if so that could be a combination of lack of game time and confidence. Still worth it for a sensible fee.

Syd the Eagle is bang-on. Sounds like a perfect Palace signing - isn't this just what Palace is all about - rescue a decent player who has gone astray. Make him good again, he becomes one of us and someone else who loves the club (only got to look at Chamakh as a perfect example).

I was very impressed with Caulker when he played against us last season.

A lot of fans don't really understand that the success of a player at a club isn't always about their technical ability but about how well they 'fit' into a set of players and understand how the manager wants them to play.

Caulker is definitely a centre defender who technically knows how to do the job very well.......Success or not with be about other factors.....As we have seen for Delaney at Ipswich for example and as we have all seen with countless other players at other clubs.

In summary if a player isn't successful at a club it isn't always accurate to say that this isn't a good player and so on.

Would be an improvement on the bench for replacing an ageing Hangeland who looked rather suspect yesterday - worth a gamble I would say?

5 million is nothing in the transfer market these days and he is still only 24 so he will have a re-sale value if he does not for the bill its an easy yes

He may not cost a large transfer fee but you can be sure after being signed by Redknapp at QPR he'll be on big wages. A 3 year deal on big wages after several poor seasons and may never get off the bench is what I call a big gamble. Perhaps he'll come and be great.

The ups and downs of Palace have left me older than my years

Hmmm relegated twice for Qpr and Cardiff, still has time to learn.

maybe a swap deal Campbell and cash might suit all parties.

I think when you sign a player, you look at his ceiling more than anything else. You assume you have competent coaches who can improve a player so you look more at the raw materials than actual form. Does he have speed? Does he head the ball well? Is he strong physically? Does he put himself about? Does he give something you can work with.

This is particularly true for a centre half. Centre halves play in pairs, one covering the other so even a great centre half will struggle with a poor partner and a weak midfield in front of him. It's not always easy to say a centre half who struggles at one club won't succeed at another with better players around him (Damo being the obvious example but Dann equally so.)

In the case of Caulker, I suspect we see a player with a very high ceiling. He's got the raw materials in abundance and, even better, his value is significantly diminished in relation to those raw materials because he's had a couple of poor seasons, or a couple of seasons with poor teams.

If we think Pardew is a good manager, then this makes him a very, very attractive prospect. He's got bags of ability; the price will almost certainly be right and we have one of the best coaching teams in the game. If all you can see is how he played at Cardiff and QPR then you are really not judging players the right way.

I really cant believe we would consider this, as black eagle said he has been relegated twice, his last game he played a full match was in the 6-1 home defeat southampton suffered to liverpool. He scored a few goals for cardiff to put himself on the map but defensively unreliable.

Actually syd that's a great post, maybe i didn't look at the bigger picture.

thinking about it Scott Dann was also relegated a couple off times and look how good he is for us.

so yes my last post was a bit lazy and Syd you are right.

If we went on what a player has done, we would sign older players much as Redknapp often seemed to.

If the club thinks it can polish him up, as the club has done for a number of other players such as Bolasie, Delaney, and Puncheon I would be all for it

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.
